This is a re-do of another genealogy page with some information changed or added since the original was created. It reads:

24 Oct 1740-Newman Scarlett was born. He spent all of his traceable life in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. There are several family stories of Newman?s origin none substantiated. Some say he was a foundling wrapped in a scarlet shawl. Some say he was born to an unmarried mother in England where the sirnames Scarlett and Newman are not unusual. Still others say he was the son of a Boston sea captain. One persistent myth is that he was a child, the lone survivor of a shipwreck off the coast of Massachusetts and washed ashore wearing scarlet clothes. He gave his birth place as Essex, England.
AGE 21-27 Oct 1761-Newman married Elizabeth (Betty) Peacock. Betty bore him 8 children, the youngest born in 1775. That baby and Betty died within days of each other. They had been married for 14 years. Betty was 32 years old.
16 June 1765-A negro by the name of Royal belonging to Newman Scarlett was baptized in the Congregational Church, Prominent families, even the Rev Spalding, had negros.
Age 31-37 1771-1777-Newman was a farmer and Public School schoolmaster 3 months a year. School was probably held in a meeting house or private home. This was during the American Revolution
AGE 35-12 Dec 1775-Newman, a widower with 7 living children, was elected as a delegate to Boston on January 2 to consider the US Constitution. He voted against it, but it passed by less than 20 votes.
AGE 35-April 18, 1775-?Scarlett, Newman, Tewksbury. Sergeant, in a Tewksbury co. of militia commanded by Lieut. Thomas Clark, Col. Green's regt., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 2 days.?
AGE 36-May 24 1776-Newman married Molly Merrill who was 29 year old maiden. Molly gave him 9 more children over the next 16 years.
AGE 37-June 4, 1777-Newman entered the service again as a Lieutenant in Captain Edward Farmer?s Company, Colonel Jonathan Reed?s Regiment and marched to reinforce the Northern army. He was discharged November 8, 1777 after 41 days of service.
AGE 38-59-1778-1799-Newman served as a Selectman and Town Clerk for Tewksbury. His signature is still on many old town records.
AGE 59-Jun 4 1799-Newman died sitting behind his desk in the city offices. His widow, Molly, died of cholera in 1822 at the age of 75, outliving Newman by 23 years. Thirteen of his 17 children also outlived him. Newman was buried in Tewksbury.

W.H. blasts Romney?s ?blatantly dishonest? welfare charge

(Valentin Flauraud/Reuters)The White House denounced Mitt Romney's "blatantly dishonest" charge that President Barack Obama is looking to "gut welfare reform" enacted under Bill Clinton by erasing a requirement that recipients actively seek work.

"This advertisement is categorically false, and it is blatantly dishonest," press secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily briefing.

A new Romney ad seizes on a mid-July memo from the Department of Health and Human Services that signals the administration is open to waiving certain work requirements. "Under Obama's plan, you wouldn't have to work and wouldn't have to train for a job," the ad says. "They just send you your welfare check." (The ad opens with a photo of Clinton, who worked with a Republican Congress to impose the work requirement, over the objections of liberal allies.)

But the memo says "HHS will only consider approving waivers relating to the work participation requirements that make changes intended to lead to more effective means of meeting the work goals of TANF" and requires states seeking waivers to submit to a "federally-approved evaluation plan."

"This administration's policy will strengthen the program by giving states the opportunity to employ more effective ways to help people get off welfare and into a job," Carney said.?

The press secretary echoed a letter from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saying that governors must commit to moving at least 20 percent more people from welfare to work.

"Any request from any state that undercuts the work requirement in welfare reform will be rejected," Carney said.

And Carney echoed an Obama campaign charge that Romney, as Massachusetts governor, signed on to a letter with 28 other Republican governors asking Congress to give them more flexibility to manage core requirements, saying they wanted waivers that would have "allowed people to stay on welfare forever."

"Those are not standards the president supports," said Carney, who underlined that the Obama administration's proposals stemmed from requests by Republican Governors Gary Herbert of Utah and Brian Sandoval of Nevada.

In an unusually lengthy and sharp response to a campaign trail attack, Carney called the ad "an utter misrepresentation of the president's policy," "dishonest," "false," said Romney's "hypocrisy knows no bounds."

The Obama campaign chimed in on a conference call with reporters.

"I'm always happy when people embrace the New Democratic policies of President Clinton. I'd just wish they'd tell the truth," former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta told reporters on the call.

Podesta praised the Obama administration, saying it was working "in tougher economic conditions" to "give people the dignity of a job."

"In advance of this call, I did have the opportunity, to the extent it matters, to check in with the president (Clinton)," Podesta said. "He completely agrees with my analysis of this."

IRS accused of ending methods that found fraud

By JOSH LEDERMAN, Associated Press

Treasury Department investigators say the Internal Revenue Service is looking the other way instead of rooting out fraud when people apply for taxpayer identification numbers.

The ID numbers are used instead of a Social Security number by non-citizens who have to file tax returns. Almost 3 million returns were filed under the program last year.

The Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration says instead of worrying about fraud, IRS managers focused on how many applications they could process and did away with fraud-detection measures that had been working.

All applications for ID numbers are processed at an IRS center in Austin, Texas.

IRS officials responding to the report say they've taken steps to rectify the problem and are reviewing other possible changes.?

Gymnast Gabby Douglas' mom filed for bankruptcy

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Court records show that the mother of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas filed for bankruptcy earlier this year in Virginia.

The filing was first reported by TMZ, a day after it was revealed that the parents of fellow U.S. Olympian Ryan Lochte were facing foreclosure in Florida.

Documents filed in January in the Eastern District of Virginia show Douglas' mother, Natalie Hawkins, filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which allows people to reorganize their finances and pay down debt over several years.

Douglas has been one of the most popular athletes at the Olympics in London, becoming the first African-American woman to win an all-around gold medal in gymnastics. The 4-foot-11 16-year-old taken home two gold medals so far and has become an international superstar, winning over fans with her smile and the nickname "Flying Squirrel."

The gymnast's agent has fielded hundreds of emails from businesses, talk shows and magazines interested in Douglas, and she's already slated to appear on the cover of a Corn Flakes box. She stands to earn millions of dollars from endorsement deals and other ventures. Douglas has been training for two years in Iowa and hasn't been home to Virginia Beach since then.

The bankruptcy filings list Hawkins as having assets totaling $163,706, with a townhouse in Virginia Beach and a 2007 Nissan Maxima accounting for the bulk of it.

Hawkins said the bankruptcy filing allowed her "to still be able to live and reorganize my debt in such a way that I could still pay what I owed."

"It's my story, it's part of me. I'm not even embarrassed about it," Hawkins said Sunday in London. "It shows that even though I didn't like to have to do it, I'm glad there was something there for me to be able to protect my home."

Hawkins also lists roughly $80,000 in debts. The bulk of that is from her mortgage. Hawkins is separated from her husband and lists about $2,500 in income a month, which comes from Social Security disability benefits and child support, according to the documents.

Natalie Hawkins went on long-term medical disability in 2009, and there were six months when the single mother of four had little to no income. In addition to mortgage payments for her home, there were expenses for Douglas' training and her other three children.

An order issued in March says Hawkins is to pay $400 a month toward her debts over a nearly five-year period.

Robopsy is a low-cost, disposable patient-mounted medical robot

Robopsy is a lowcost, disposable patientmounted medical robot

In a less gelatin-centric demo, the Harvard-based team behind the Robotically Steerable Probe showed off some Robopsy devices during our visit to the school, rings that can help medical imaging technology like CT, ultrasound and MR physically pinpoint precise locations on patients. The devices, which can hold up to ten needles, are lightweight, mounting directly on patients via adhesives or straps. The medical robots are made largely of inexpensive injection molded plastic parts, making them disposable after they've been used on a patient, popping the motors and other control electronics onto another device. In all, the team says Robopsy rings are "orders of magnitude" cheaper and lighter than other medical robotic devices. Check out a video of the one of the Robopsy devices running after the break.

Rutherford ends silver agony on biggest stage

Briton Greg Rutherford won the men's Olympic long jump title here on Saturday to finally win gold after twice taking silver in other championship finals.

The 25-year-old won with a best jump of 8.31m while Australian Mitchell Watt took silver in 8.16m and Will Claye of the United States won the bronze with 8.12m.

It was the shortest winning jump since another Briton, Lynn Davies, won gold in the 1964 Tokyo Games with a leap of 8.07 metres.

His victory was part of a dream night for Britain in the Olympic Stadium as heptathlete Jessica Ennis and 10,000m runner Mo Farah also won gold.

"I knew I was in great shape," said Rutherford. "I have probably one of the best teams in the world.

"They are incredible. I have the most amazing parents and the most beautiful girlfriend. I can't tell you how hard everyone has worked for me.

"I thought I would jump further than that but I don't care. I am an Olympic champion. What a night for British athletes, three gold medals out of three."

Rutherford, who comes from a rich sporting heritage as his great great grandfather Jock Rutherford played football for England from 1904-08, had led from the second round with an effort of 8.21 metres.

However, he produced his winning leap in the fourth round to seal victory in a low quality final.

Defending champion Irving Saladino of Panama failed to qualify for the final.

Lost northern fur seal shows up on Hawaii beach

HONOLULU (AP) ? A seal that would normally live in waters around the Aleutian Islands and California has shown up thousands of miles away on a beach in Hawaii.

David Schofield, a marine mammal response coordinator at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says people found the northern fur seal near Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore. It was emaciated, underweight and weak.

Schofield said Wednesday this is the first time on record that a wild fur seal has come to Hawaii. Hawaii's only native seal is the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

It's not clear how the female visitor, a young adult, got so far south.

The seal doesn't have a tag and it's not clear where she's from. NOAA officials have taken her to the Honolulu Zoo to be cared for.

Roomba recycled into Google-powered telepresence bot

14 hrs.

A partially destroyed Roomba has been given a second life as a telepresence robot controlled via a Google+ Hangout. The bot, named Oscar, can be driven?by any of the participants in the video chat session, which as one might imagine, makes it a bit squirrely to control.

It's a fairly straightforward demo of the Google+ Hangout API (application programming interface), which lets developers use the video chat tool in their projects. In this case it's a Google employee who seems to have done it during his spare time.

The original Roomba was "hurt in a freak robot melting accident," but a little fiddling with the Roomba's well-known circuitry let it communicate with a Web server and take commands. He?then mapped those commands to some buttons, plastered them into a custom Google+ Hangout, and the project was live.

Everyone can see the robot's view, since there's a tablet with a webcam mounted on it. And anyone near the robot can see the Hangout as well. There are more capable telepresence robots out there, but it's a fun project nevertheless. If you're interested in how it was done, all the code and instructions can be found on creator Gus Class' website.

The public can get a look at Oscar during a public Hangout?Friday at 10 a.m. PT.?In the meantime, you can watch the video of him in action below.
