Israel attacks Syria: Details sketchy and of course contradictory

Exactly what I had feared was going to happened has happened. Israel has attacked Syria.
I have mentioned this fear previously at the blog and over at MoA

That was three days ago. I believe I made that remark prior to that date over at MoA
It sure looked as if that was going to happen and sadly it did

Israeli aircraft fires missile at target in Syria

Israeli aircraft attacked a truck convoy along the Syria-Lebanon border Wednesday, hitting one vehicle carrying weapons, according to a Western officials and a former Lebanese security official. But Syria denied there had been a border attack, saying instead that the Israelis had hit a defense research center near Damascus.

The conflicting reports deepened the murkiness surrounding the strike, which was met with official silence in Israel. ?

Syria says Israel attacked military research center?

Syria Says Israel Struck Military Site, as Accounts Diverge -WP?

?Israel conducted a rare airstrike on a military target inside Syria near the border with Lebanon

No matter how this is spun, it is clear Israel has attacked Syria

Maxxis' Haagsma Wins WORCS Round 1 - Side x Side Vehicle News

WORCS Round 1 Podium

Team Maxxis/H&M?s David Haagsma topped the podium

Team Maxxis/H&M?s David Haagsma topped the podium at the WORCS ATV season kick-off, while teammate Beau Baron took third place at the race, held January 26-27 in Peoria, Arizona.

Riding through thick mud for the entire race, Haagsma took the lead with a pass at the end of the 13th lap. He held the front spot through to the finish line, and took first place with a seven-second margin of victory. Baron, who sparred with another rider for the third place spot for much of the event, scored the fastest Pro lap time of the race at 6:29.113 minutes. Both Haagsma and Baron trusted Razr Xc rears and Razr2 fronts for Round 1, and the tires were more than a match for the sloppy conditions. ?It rained a lot,? said Haagsma. ?We had a mud race, and I had a horrible start, but my tires got me all the way back up to the front, and I took first!?

The Pro contest wasn?t Baron?s only shot at a Round 1 podium: he also took first place in the Side x Side Pro Production race on 27? Vipr tires. In the Pro Am ATV class, Maxxis rider Grant Mitchell took second place.

Maxxis congratulates David Haagsma and Beau Baron on their victories, and thanks them for their outstanding performances.

Amazon Earnings, Outlook Miss; Revenue Jumps

Amazon's quarterly earnings and outlook fell short of analysts' expectations Tuesday but the company's revenue jumped 22 percent and margins were strong during the key holiday quarter.

The stock initially fell then popped higher in extended-hours trading. (Click here to get the latest quotes for Amazon.)

Chief Executive Jeff Bezos highlighted the Kindle's e-book business, calling it a multibillion-dollar category that grew about 70 percent in 2012. Its traditional physical book business rose about five percent in the same period, he noted.

"We're now seeing the transition we`ve been expecting," Bezos said in the company's results statement.

Profits have shrunk in recent years as the company invested for longer-term growth, building massive fulfillment centers, developing a Kindle Fire tablet hardware business in competition with Apple and expanding into Internet-based cloud services.

The fourth-quarter profit results suggested that Amazon may be able to generate attractive returns from such spending, analysts said.

"The fourth-quarter operating income was up more than expected," said R.J. Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "This supports the bull case that Amazon can monetize its growth over the longer term."

Net income fell to $97 million, or 21 cents a share in the fourth quarter, from $177 million, or 38 cents a share in the same period a year earlier.

Operating expenses increased 22 percent, amid a 56-percent increase in technology and content expenses, a 43-percent increase in marketing expenses and a 36-percent increase in fulfillment costs.

Operating income jumped 56 percent to $405 million in the fourth quarter, compared with $260 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, Amazon also said.

Revenue increased 22 percent to $21.27 billion during the quarter from $17.43 billion a year ago.

Analysts had expected the company to report earnings excluding items of 28 cents a share on $22.26 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.

"It was a much better-than-expected gross margin, a strong forward indicator to drive margin expansion. What is really important is gross profit dollars and that line is stronger," said Ken Sena at Evercore Partners.

"Incredibly strong margins," said Jordan Rohan, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus. Amazon generated the highest quarterly gross margin in its North America business in more than three years, he noted.

On the conference call, Amazon's CFO said its cloud computing business is growing very fast, helping profitability and that it will continue to add capacity to its shipping service in 2013. The company is also investing in China and Europe.

For the first quarter, the company expects operating earnings to be between a loss of $285 million and a profit of $65 million and revenue of $15 billion to $16.6 billion. Analysts currently expect revenue of $16.86 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

HTC 'M7' parts caught on video

Droid DNA-like design in a smaller chassis, with a dedicated camera button to boot

With the recent emergence of certain leaked photos, we've slowly been able to piece together a picture of HTC's upcoming 'M7' handset. And the successor to the One X has cropped up on camera again today, disassembled, in the form couple of leaked component parts. ETrade Supply got hold of what seems to be the back case and front housing of the phone, which looks a little smaller than the similarly-designed Droid DNA. That suggests we might be dealing with a 4.7-inch screen, as has been rumored in recent months.

Also of note is the second front-facing speaker down below, which roughly matches a render that leaked out a couple of weeks ago. And there's what seems to be a dedicated camera button on the right edge, below the volume rocker, an unusual sight on an HTC Android phone.

Without the front glass in place -- not to mention functioning innards -- it's difficult to get an overall impression of the phone. But it looks like we're dealing with a handset that shares much in common with the DNA and its international cousin, the HTC Butterfly. The edges are squared off, in stark contrast to the curved One X and One S, and there's a slight hump to the back, like the DNA and Windows Phone 8X.

There's no way of knowing whether this is a finalized HTC design or merely a prototype, but the parts shown in today's video certainly tick all the boxes we were expecting from a 2013 HTC flagship. The 'M7' is e

Anti Aging Skin Care Products Myths | Revista Women's Health

Anti aging skin care products

Are you looking for anti aging skin care products? Have you thought of buying one?

Anti aging skin care products remind me of the song ?18 till I die?. Indeed, anti aging skin care products are very popular today; and why not, who doesn?t want to look young for ever?

Talking of anti aging skin care products, the first thing that comes to mind is vitamin C based anti aging skin care products. These products work by enabling the synthesis of collagen (a structural protein that is found in skin). This category of anti aging skin care products is related to anti-oxidants.

Anti aging skin care products that are based on vitamin C are, however, posed with the danger of getting oxidised themselves (as they come into contact with air during their usage).

So some anti aging skin care products are based on the derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. However, the effectiveness of such anti aging skin care is not as much as it is for vitamin C based ant aging skin care products.

Besides vitamin C, vitamin E and lipoic acid are anti-oxidants too. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble anti-oxidant that is found in human blood and helps in building resistance against infection.

Vitamin E is also known to inhibit cancer. Liponic acid is known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by reversing the skin damage caused by the aging process.

Phytochemicals form the other category of anti aging skin care products. Phytochemical are special chemicals that are extracted from plants. There are a variety of phytochemicals that are in use today. Phytochemicals prevent occurrence of cancer of certain types; these include prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer. That is why they find their place in anti aging skin care products.

Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti aging skin care products.

The field of anti aging skin care products is vast and needs a lot of research. Though the currently available products are effective, they still have challenges to combat. Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and help get better and cheaper anti aging skin care products.

However, anti aging skin care products should be used only as a supplement to the natural ways of skin and body care. So, drinking a lot of water, getting a good night sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping stress at bay are essential means of delaying the aging process. No anti aging skin care product can replace them really.

Now that you know everything about skin care products, it would be easier to choose which one is the best for you.

Activists: 65 bodies found in Syria's Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists say at least 65 bodies, some of them with their hands tied behind their back, have been found on a river bank in the northern city of Aleppo.

The head of the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights Rami Abdul-Rahman says the bodies were discovered Tuesday in the city's contested district of al-Bustan al-Qasr. All of the dead are men.

Abdul-Rahman says it's not clear who was behind the killings, when they occurred or who the dead are.

The Local Coordination Committees activist group put the number of bodies found at 80.

In videos activists posted online, dozens of bodies are seen lying on the ground along a river, their hands bound behind their backs. Some appear to be bleeding from what could be gunshot wounds to the head.

Death at work law suits likely to escalate | The Times

Lawyers are predicting a sharp rise in the number of British companies that will be prosecuted for failing to prevent the deaths of employees in the workplace, as health and safety authorities step up enforcement of tough corporate manslaughter laws.

(AP) ? Marine experts say a dolphin seen shaking black gunk from its snout after wandering into a polluted canal in New York may well have been ill before it lost its way and died.

The wayward dolphin splashed around in the filthy waters of the Gowanus Canal before it died Friday. The canal is a Superfund site, where for years factories and fuel refineries operated. It runs through an industrial zone near some of Brooklyn's wealthiest neighborhoods.

Marine experts had planned to help the dolphin on Saturday morning if it didn't get out of the canal during high tide. They had decided to hold off intervening Friday because of the stress the dolphin might have experienced in being captured.

Experts plan to conduct a necropsy to determine why the dolphin died.

Chicago woman loses 4th child to gun violence

CHICAGO (AP) ? At least five people were gunned down Saturday in Chicago, including a 34-year-old man whose mother had already lost her three other children to shootings.

Ronnie Chambers, who was his mother Shirley's youngest child, was shot in the head while sitting in a parked car on the city's West Side. A 21-year-old man who was also in the car was wounded, police said.

Shirley Chambers, whose two other sons and daughter were shot in separate attacks more than a decade ago, was left grieving again on Saturday, WLS-TV reported (http://bit.ly/VCSh8i ).

"Right now, I'm totally lost because Ronnie was my only surviving son," Chambers said.

Shirley Chambers' first child, Carlos, was shot and killed by a high school classmate in 1995 after an argument. He was 18. Her daughter Latoya, then 15, and her other son Jerome were shot and killed within months of one another in 2000.

"What did I do wrong? I was there for them. We didn't have everything we wanted but we had what we needed," she asked Saturday.

Chambers said despite this latest tragic chapter in her life, she's not bitter or angry.

"They took my only child. I have nobody right now. That's my only baby," she said.

A few hours after Ronnie Chambers was killed, a gunman opened fire on three men near a South Side eatery, killing two of them and wounding the third, police said.

On Saturday afternoon, detectives were called to the scene of another shooting in which a man in his 30s and a teenager were shot to death. There had been no arrests.

Chicago's homicide count eclipsed 500 last year for the first time since 2008. As grim as it is, Chicago's homicide rate was almost double in the early 1990s ? averaging around 900 ? before violent crime began dropping in cities across America.

Last year's increase, though, stood in sharp contrast to New York, where homicides fell 21 percent from 2011, as of early December.

KONNA, Mali (AP) ? French and Malian troops regained control of the airport and bridge of the crucial, northern city of Gao on Saturday, marking their biggest advance yet in their bid to oust al-Qaida-linked extremists who have controlled northern Mali for months, military officials said.

The move comes just two weeks after France launched its military offensive in support of the shaky, central government of this former French colony. It is unclear what kind of resistance French and Malian troops will face in the coming days.

The French military said in a statement on its website that their special forces, which had stormed in by land and by air, had come under fire from "several terrorist elements" that were later "destroyed."

In a later press release entitled "French and Malian troops liberate Gao" the French ministry of defense said they were bringing back the town's mayor, Sadou Diallo, who had fled to the Malian capital of Bamako far to the west.

However, a city official interviewed by telephone by The Associated Press said coalition forces so far only controlled the airport, the bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.

And in Paris, a defense ministry official clarified that the city had not been fully liberated, and that the process of freeing Gao was continuing.

Both officials spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Swooping in under the cover of darkness, the French and Malian forces faced sporadic "acts of harassment" during the day, said Col. Thierry Burkhard, a French military spokesman in Paris. He had no immediate estimate on casualties.

Gao, the largest city in northern Mali, was seized by a mixture of al-Qaida-linked fighters more than nine months ago, and the battle to retake the city is expected to be tough.

The rebel group that turned Gao into a replica of Afghanistan under the Taliban has close ties to Moktar Belmoktar, the Algerian national who has long operated in Mali and who last week claimed responsibility for the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

His fighters are believed to include Algerians, Egyptians, Mauritanians, Libyans, Tunisians, Pakistanis and even Afghans.

The French assault began with the capture of the airport, a strategic landing strip that opens the way for easier sorties all over northern Mali.

The further capture of a major bridge leading into the town means that the jihadists "saw their means of transport and their logistics sites destroyed," French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement.

The operation in Gao comes at the same time as airstrikes in the two other provincial capitals held by the extremists ? the cities of Timbuktu and Kidal, which like Gao fell to the rebels last April, during the chaotic aftermath of a coup in the distant capital. Nearly 30 bombs have been fired from fighter jets over the past two days, said France's military in a communique.

The simultaneous aerial attacks also come at the same time that ground troops are carrying out a pincer movement, with French and African land forces heading to Gao from Niger, where Chad has sent a battalion.

French and Malian forces are also heading to Timbuktu, via the central corridor that leads straight north from the central Malian city of Segou, via the recently recaptured town of Diabaly.

In an interview Saturday, Col. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir told The Associated Press that the African force will be expanded from an anticipated 3,200 troops to some 5,700 ? which does not include the 2,200 soldiers promised by Chad.

Most analysts had said the earlier figure was far too small to confront the Islamists given the vast territory they hold ? an area larger than Afghanistan.

"Because they've seen that the area itself, northern Mali is too large for that number of troops so there was a need to increase the number and that's why we arrived at 5700," said Abdulkadir, the force commander. "I believe that as time goes on it may be necessary to increase the strength again. Because France pulls out we definitely must have to increase the strength."

Since France began its military operation, the Islamists have retreated from three small towns in central Mali: Diabaly, Konna and Douentza.

For the first time on Saturday, Malian authorities opened the town of Konna to reporters. Although in most places Malians have applauded the arrival of the French, the town of Konna, built around a single, hard-top road, provides a counterweight and reveals the human toll of the operation.

Konna's mayor had earlier said that 11 civilians were killed during the airstrikes. Among them were four relatives of Souleymane Maiga, a young, 20-something man who ran for cover on Jan. 11, the first day of the airstrikes.

He hid between two mud walls separating his compound from that of his neighbor. His aunt, and the four children, including several young girls that were with her, abandoned the pot on an open flame where they were preparing the midday meal and ran inside the house.

French combat helicopters, looking for rebels, strafed the buildings made of nothing more than mud mixed with straw.

"The women were preparing food right here in the shade of this tree, when we heard the noise made by the aircraft. I ran and threw myself between the two walls over there," said Maiga. "After it was over, I went to the house, and when I opened the door, I saw that they were dead. Of the five people inside, only one survived. A toddler. The bodies were one on top of the other. The toddler was crying. The bullets had pierced the door. I tried to find their pulses, but they were gone. I realized it was over. I picked up the child and took him to a relative's house in town."

The zinc door of the modest house is pockmarked by bullet holes, some several inches wide. If you close it behind you, they let in jets of light, which illuminate the unlit interior. The can of tomato paste that the women had just opened in order to make a sauce served over rice, still sits where they left it. It had been partially opened, and now the tomato paste inside has spoiled.

ROME/MILAN (Reuters) - The four-member board of the Bank of Italy was meeting on Saturday to consider the position of scandal-hit bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena and decide whether to authorize its request for 3.9 billion euros ($5.3 billion) of state loans.

Italy's third-largest bank this week revealed loss-making derivatives trades that could cost it about 720 million euros, sinking its shares and prompting questions about how the risky deals could have been hidden from regulators.

The issue has shot to the center of the campaign for a February 24-25 national election and politicians have blamed the Bank of Italy (BOI), led by current European Central Bank President Mario Draghi at the time of the deals, for failing to spot them.

At the meeting chaired by current Bank of Italy Governor Ignazio Visco, the board will assess whether Monte Paschi meets the stability requirements necessary to receive the state loans.

The Tuscan bank, the world's oldest, was forced to seek state aid last year for the second time since 2009 after becoming one of just four European lenders that failed to meet tougher capital requirements set by regulators.

Under the proposed scheme, the bank would issue 3.9 billion euros of bonds to the Italian Treasury, with just under half of these replacing 1.9 billion euros of existing state loans.

Visco said on Friday the bank was unquestionably stable. The lender's new management, appointed last year to turn it around, said the situation was "completely under control".

The bank would pay a hefty 9 percent coupon on the bonds, which are worth more than its current market capitalization of 3 billion euros. The coupon will increase by 0.5 percentage point every two years up to a maximum of 15 percent.

At a stormy meeting at Monte Paschi's Siena headquarters on Friday, shareholders approved two capital increases for 6.5 billion euros to be carried out if needed in the next five years, which are a condition of the state bailout.

That raises the prospect of possible nationalization, because if the bank cannot repay the state bonds or the coupons attached to them, it will have to issue shares to the Treasury.

Prime Minister Mario Monti said late on Friday he considered nationalization a "remote hypothesis".

TAXPAYERS' MONEY

Monti, bidding for a second term in the election, defended his government's decision to rescue it with taxpayers' money. "It's a loan, with a high interest rate," he said.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Visco sought to deflect accusations that the BOI had not done its job properly.

"It is wrong to insinuate that there was a lack of supervision by the Bank of Italy," he said on Friday, adding the BOI would cooperate with prosecutors investigating the lender.

Draghi, also in Davos, took no questions from reporters.

Visco's task was made more difficult by a report in the Corriere della Sera daily on Friday which included excerpts of a document drafted by six BOI inspectors expressing concerns over the two main trades under scrutiny as long ago as 2010.

That report would have been sent to the BOI's head of bank supervision at the time, Anna Maria Tarantola, who has since left the bank to become president of state broadcaster RAI.

Visco sidestepped questions about whether Draghi knew about the 2008-09 derivatives trades, which involved Japanese bank Nomura and Deutsche Bank.

Internal auditors at Monte Paschi already detected anomalies at the bank's finance department responsible for derivative trades three years ago, daily Il Sole 24 Ore said on Saturday.

However, the outcome of the November 26, 2009 audit was "partially favorable" for the bank, contrasting with a "partially unfavorable" rating by the Bank of Italy after a May-August 2010 inspection.

Monte Paschi was already under investigation over its 9-billion-euro cash acquisition of smaller lender Antonveneta from Spain's Santander in 2007.

Santander had bought Antonveneta for 6.6 billion euros in a three-way break-up bid for Dutch bank ABN AMRO, and almost immediately sold it on to Monte dei Paschi netting a hefty gain.

This Little Devil Won?t Change His Ways, But He?s Still Worth Saving

To many, the Tasmanian devil is a just a rowdy, screeching Looney Tunes character. But to those in Australia, the devil is a national symbol and was once a common sight in its wildlife landscape. However, now this beloved creature is being severely threatened by a strange contagious cancer.?

The cancer is fast spreading and extremely deadly? it's already killed 84 percent of the Tasmanian devil population. To date, there are only around 35,000 of the devils left in the wild.?

The gravity of the situation can be seen in scientists? most recent plan to ensure the species? survival: 15 cancer-free Tasmanian devils were released onto nearby Maria Island.? The scientists hope to create a healthy population of devils in case the cancer wipes out the remaining ones in Tasmania.? In addition to the Maria devils, 500 healthy devils have also been placed in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries.? The devils on Maria Island will safeguard the species from becoming too domesticated to survive in the wild, which could happen if they were solely bred in zoos.?

These extreme measures are necessary due to the unique nature of the Tasmanian devils? cancer.? Officially called the Devil Facial Tumor Disease? (DFTD), this fast-moving cancer is contagious.? It can be spread from devil to devil, unlike most cancers, which cannot be spread through contact.? A contagious cancer is especially problematic for Tasmanian devils; the devils are violent animals that greet each other by fighting and biting each other?s faces. The biting is the reason that the cancer has spread so quickly.? It also explains why DFTD usually presents first as facial tumors before spreading to the rest of the body.?

Dr. Elizabeth Murchison of the University of Cambridge was one of the first to discover the unusual nature of the devils? cancer.? As she explained in her TEDx talk, Murchison used DNA from one devil, Jonas, to investigate its contagiousness: ?Being a geneticist I?m always interested in looking at DNA and mutations ? When I looked at the sequence of the DNA and compared the sequence of Jonas?s tumor to that of the rest of his body, I discovered that they had a completely different genetic profile? What this told us was that Jonas?s tumor did not arise from cells on his own body.??

Since her talk, Murchison has led the effort to sequence hundreds of genomes from devils? tumors.? She hopes that researching the facial tumors further will lead to a vaccine for DFTD.? Still, until a vaccine is developed, the Tasmanian government is putting its efforts into establishing an insurance population on Maria Island.? ?

Conservationists are hoping for a breakthrough as quickly as possible, so the devils can serve as more than fodder for cartoons, but as integral members of the country's ecosystem.

RolePlayGateway?

Trigger warning: Abuse, torture, medicalization, pathologization, compliance-based treatment, imprisonment, ableism, ageism (targeting youth), human rights abuses. This is NOT a school roleplay or a typical "troubled teens" roleplay. See FAQ and Expectations for more.

Compliance.

It's a virtue. In fact, it's the only virtue that matters, at least when you're at Northern Star Academy.

You are a young adult. One night you were asleep in your bed, only to be woken by strange men in black t-shirts and cargo pants bursting into your room with bright lights shining in your eyes, hauling you from your bed without regard to your formerly sleeping state, and handcuffing you while pressing your face against the floor. Had you called or screamed or sobbed, no one else in your family was there to hear you. You were taken to a waiting car or van outside and driven to the nearest airport. When your flight landed in Portland, Oregon, you were hustled into another van for a good, six hour drive to the academy's grounds in the wilderness.

Welcome to Northern Star Academy.

You've been sent here because your parents believed unscrupulous marketing that warned them that you are a danger to yourself and a future menace to society. You've been labeled a "troubled teen," and you've fallen into the grasps of a multi-million dollar industry that preys on middle to upper class families and enacts months to years of violence and abuse on their children.

Some of the residents at Northern Star have been here for days or weeks. Others have been here for months or years. Some are gender or sexual minorities. Others are disabled or otherwise neurologically divergent. Some have experimented on occasion with alcohol, weed, other drugs, or smoking, and some have had previous encounters with the criminal justice system. Others have never run afoul of the law.

But that's not to worry. You're here at Northern Star, where you'll learn very quickly the one virtue that may allow you to leave one day at least somewhat better off than the others. You'll learn that what the staff and administrators really want from you is compliance.

Comply, and you might finish the program on time.

FAQ and Expectations

Is this just another school roleplay?
This is not a school roleplay or a typical "troubled teen" roleplay. This roleplay is intended to use compelling characters, created by you, to explore the grim and disturbing realities of the troubled teen industry and its long history of abuse and torture of youth trapped in it. I am not attempting to romanticize or downplay those realities, and I expect that writers should hold themselves to the same standards.

Um, I don't know anything about this "troubled teen" industry.
That's fine. I'm happy to answer questions and provide resources. You can probably also ask MartianJusticiar, who is an attorney with an extensive background in this area. You don't need to be an expert. If you're not comfortable or don't want to research a lot of information, it might be better to play the part of a resident, as your character would primarily be reacting to what is happening at the facility.

So how often do I have to post?
At minimum, one post per month is a good standard. More is fine, though, too, and if you're extremely enthusiastic and excited, go for it! Just be careful of other folks who may be posting less frequently, and do attempt to avoid plot awkwardness. (i.e. You and another writer have written a fantastic ten pages worth of content in just one week, but someone else who is only posting once a month had their character in your scene, so no one actually knows what happened to that character or why that character hasn't actually said anything in the entire course of this scene. That's awkward.)

And how long do posts need to be?
There is no minimum or maximum length or word count. (If this is an access need, and you require more structure or specific, concrete guidelines, just let me know and I'd be happy to provide that structure for you.)

So how are we posting, exactly?
We're likely to use RolePlayGateway's integrated system, which allows writers to use a chat-style interface, a forum-style interface, or a real-time collaborative interface. You may feel free to use any or all of those media.

What if I can't post at some point or need a break?
If you have extenuating circumstances due to nature, family emergency, personal circumstances, work or school schedules, illness, spoon loss, prior engagements, or other reasonable excuses not to be posting for longer than that period, please simply let me know as soon as possible. I won't be upset as long as I know what's going on. (You don't need to go into detail if you're not comfortable doing that.)

What kinds of "content" might I encounter or am I allowed to write about in this story?
There may be sexual content (within the site's rules--click here to see Gateway's guidelines), romantic content, profanity, violence, and other potentially triggering, uncomfortable, unpleasant, or disturbing content. Be artful. Let events occur to develop character or plot, and not simply for the sake of including something racy or gory. If you are concerned about triggers because you are a survivor or because you have PTSD, anxiety, or phobias, but still want to participate, please contact me so we can talk about how to make this an accessible space for you and as safe as possible.

How many people will be accepted?
We'll be a small group of no more than five, so four other people than myself. I do expect people who are willing to commit to a very long-term writing process, that may stick around for months, or quite possibly, for years. That's why I'm not obsessive over the posting frequency. I also expect that all of us will grow both in our personal character and in our writing, as we stay together as a group. My goal is to conclude within two years once we've started, but it could stretch for longer. I'd like to write a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. Complexity is a plus.

Character Submissions

Who can I write for?
You may choose to play the parts of any of the following:
- Residents. Youth ages 13 to 25 currently at Northern Star. Older youth are more likely to have been here for longer.
- Staff. Folks 18 and over working at Northern Star. Some may be former residents, but most are not.
- Family members and friends. Folks outside of Northern Star who may or may not know the truth of what is happening there, and may or may not care enough to intervene.
- Lawyers, advocates, activists, survivors. Folks who may or may not have current direct connections to Northern Star, but have a vested interest in identifying abuses that occur and rescuing residents, legally or otherwise.
- Other roles that you can conceive of playing.

Can I have more than one character?
You may have multiple characters, in the same or in different roles, but be mindful that you will then be responsible for writing for all of them at least semi-regularly. You're also free to have only one, if you prefer.

What do you want from me?
Please draw connections in your backstories and future plot or character development arc ideas. This thread is an excellent place in which to do that.

So, character sheet, profile, skeleton, anything like that?
Nope. You can write one if it makes you feel better, or you can forego one and have simply a name and some kind of conceptual idea, however brief. All that's necessary, at the beginning, is a name and a role. I fully expect your characters to become well-developed and compelling as we continue to write.

What now?

As this is an interest check post, I'm primarily interested in learning who around here is both attracted to this idea and willing and able to commit to a long-term collaborative writing project that may become incredibly complex, incredibly grim and dark, and otherwise rather literary in nature. Please feel free to leave other questions, ideas, or suggestions, whether for plot or for characters. As per the note above on multiple characters, have no fear -- I am likely to end up with literally dozens within a fairly short time frame after starting.

Notice: If you like this idea and or this synopsis and or (future or present) in-character posts, please do not simply copy and paste, or copy and paste and make slight alterations, and post it (or any future in-character posts) either on this site or anywhere else without my explicit permission and consent (or that of the author of a particular in-character post). I can be reached by email at ohnoitsdark (at) gmail.com for such requests. Doing so without my permission or consent constitutes plagiarism and is a violation of U.S. federal law and an infringement of my intellectual property. If you choose to do so anyway, please expect nasty legal notes from me. This notice and this interest check were both posted on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013, at 11:55PM Eastern Standard Time.

Flooring: How Do You Pick Between Wood and Laminate ...

Wood or laminate? It?s not Shakespeare?but that is the question many homeowners ask before tackling an indoor home improvement flooring project.

Jim Vonch, a flooring sales rep with Schilling Design Center and Lumber in Mokena, likes to ask customers a few questions before he comes up with his answer.

What area of the home are you interested in doing? What kind of lifestyle do you lead? Do you have pets? Kids?

After Vonch gathers this bit of personal information, then he offers his advice and often makes his recommendations. He starts with this: There are pros and cons to both wood and laminate flooring products.

Hardwood products will scratch and show dents. Most stained wood floors will undergo a change in color over time, albeit even a slight change in some cases. But hardwood floors can be resurfaced.

Laminate flooring does not fade from sunlight, but it can show signs of wear and tear, too. While some companies make touch-up and chip repair kits, laminates cannot be refinished. And most laminates require padding to reduce the floor?s potential for noise.

?As far as hardwood, you?ve got the warmth of the wood,? Vonch said. ?Who doesn?t like wood? It?s a beautiful thing. Everyone?s concern is, ?Will this scratch?? All wood products are going to scratch no matter how dense and how hard the product is?if it?s soft?they?re both going to scratch equally.

?Some products hide the scratches better than other products. A semi-gloss finish will help. A mate finish will help hid those scratches more. The higher the gloss, the more the scratches show. The texture, too, in the wood helps camouflage surface scratches.?

Vonch said it?s important for homeowners to arrive at a price point: How much do you want to spend on your flooring project? And ask this question, too: Are you going to do it yourself? Or hire a pro to handle the installation?

Low-end hardwood flooring sells for about $2.79 a square foot, he said. High end products sell for $12-$13 a square foot?or more. Laminate products run a similar price range gamut.

Vonch doesn?t like to focus too much on price, though.

?I usually don?t worry about price right off the bat,? he said. ?I try to kind of pre-qualify (customers) a little bit. I just don?t come out and ask. I don?t want to insult anybody when it comes to that.

?I start figuring it out. If I shoot them a price and show them a product?that just comes from, ?How long are you going to be in your home?? Do you plan on being there a while?? I start figuring out things through questions like that.

?If you?re not going to be there a while, yeah, you want something that?s going to be nice. Maybe in three years when you sell it, it will still look really nice. But you don?t spend a lot of money and you can get a really nice looking floor.?

COMING SATURDAY: Log on at 6 a.m. Saturday to hear what Schilling Lumber's Jim Vonch has to say about one of the hottest selling hardwood products in his showroom?exotic walnut. Plus, his tips for do-it-yourselfers.

Bankruptcy Court Clears Way For Montefiore Medical Center To ...

Cirrus Logic Inc. (CRUS: Quote) on Thursday reported better-than-expected results for the third quarter on strong demand for its audio products, but forecast revenues for the fourth quarter below analysts? estimates. The company?s shares gained more than 1 percent in extended trade following the announcement of its third-quarter results.

Austin, Texas-based Cirrus Logic develops high-precision, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for a range of audio and energy markets.

Jason Rhode, president and chief executive officer of Cirrus Logic said, ?Q3 was a great quarter for Cirrus Logic as demand for multiple new products in portable audio drove revenue above our expectations. During the quarter, we gained traction with our portable audio and LED lighting products, where we began shipping in additional SKUs and customers.?

The company?s third-quarter net income was $67.86 million or $0.99 per share, up from $16.73 million or $0.25 per share last year.

Adjusted income was $112.80 million or $1.64 per share, compared to adjusted income of $28.85 million or $0.43 per share in the same period last year. On average, eight analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $1.41 per share for the quarter. Analysts? estimates typically exclude special items.

Net revenues for the quarter more than doubled to $310.13 million from $122.37 million in the same period last year. Analysts had a consensus revenue estimate of $285.96 million.

The strong revenue growth reflects revenues from Cirrus Logic?s audio products that almost tripled from the prior-year period to $300.01 million. Meanwhile, energy products revenue declined 40 percent to $10.12 million.

The latest quarter?s results include restructuring and other costs of $3.29 million.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, Cirrus Logic expects revenues between $200 million and $220 million, up more than 80 percent year-over-year and down more than 35 percent sequentially. Analysts currently estimate revenues of $234.93 million.

The company projects gross margin for the quarter in a range of 50 percent to 52 percent.

Cirrus Logic noted that shipments in late December were higher than anticipated, driving revenue $25 million above the midpoint of its guidance for the third quarter. As a result of the higher revenue base in the third quarter, the company now anticipates the sequential decline in fourth-quarter revenues to be more pronounced.

CEO Rhode said, ?Our outlook for the year remains on track, and we are positioned well for further growth in FY14. We continue to see significant opportunities to grow our business with both new and existing customers.?

Cirrus Logic, a key supplier to Apple Inc. (AAPL), said it remained dedicated to diversifying its customer base, though it would take time and resource commitment. The company noted that these efforts were now beginning to pay off in the audio product line where it was now shipping catalog devices to several mobile phone manufacturers.

CRUS closed Thursday?s trading at $26.71, down $3.24 or 10.82 percent on a volume of 9.19 million shares. In after-hours, the stock gained $0.29 or 1.09 percent to $27.00.

Putting the squeeze on cells: By deforming cells, researchers can deliver RNA, proteins and nanoparticles for many applications

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Living cells are surrounded by a membrane that tightly regulates what gets in and out of the cell. This barrier is necessary for cells to control their internal environment, but it makes it more difficult for scientists to deliver large molecules such as nanoparticles for imaging, or proteins that can reprogram them into pluripotent stem cells.

Researchers from MIT have now found a safe and efficient way to get large molecules through the cell membrane, by squeezing the cells through a narrow constriction that opens up tiny, temporary holes in the membrane. Any large molecules floating outside the cell -- such as RNA, proteins or nanoparticles -- can slide through the membrane during this disruption.

Using this technique, the researchers were able to deliver reprogramming proteins and generate induced pluripotent stem cells with a success rate 10 to 100 times better than any existing method. They also used it to deliver nanoparticles, including carbon nanotubes and quantum dots, which can be used to image cells and monitor what's happening inside them.

"It's very useful to be able to get large molecules into cells. We thought it might be interesting if you could have a relatively simple system that could deliver many different compounds," says Klavs Jensen, the Warren K. Lewis Professor of Chemical Engineering, professor of materials science and engineering, and a senior author of a paper describing the new device in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, is also a senior author of the paper. Lead authors are chemical engineering graduate student Armon Sharei, Koch Institute research scientist Janet Zoldan, and chemical engineering research associate Andrea Adamo.

A general approach

Biologists have previously developed several ways to get large molecules into cells, but all of them have drawbacks. DNA or RNA can be packaged into viruses, which are adept at entering cells, but that approach carries the risk that some of the viral DNA will get integrated into the host cell. This method is commonly used in lab experiments but has not been approved by the FDA for use in human patients.

Another way to sneak large molecules into a cell is to tag them with a short protein that can penetrate the cell membrane and drag the larger cargo along with it. Alternatively, DNA or proteins can be packaged into synthetic nanoparticles that can enter cells. However, these systems often need to be re-engineered depending on the type of cell and material being delivered. Also, with some nanoparticles much of the material ends up trapped in protective sacs called endosomes inside the cell, and there can be potential toxic side effects.

Electroporation, which involves giving cells a jolt of electricity that opens up the cell membrane, is a more general approach but can be damaging to both cells and the material being delivered.

The new MIT system appears to work for many cell types -- so far, the researchers have successfully tested it with more than a dozen types, including both human and mouse cells. It also works in cells taken directly from human patients, which are usually much more difficult to manipulate than human cell lines grown specifically for lab research.

The new device builds on previous work by Jensen and Langer's labs, in which they used microinjection to force large molecules into cells as they flowed through a microfluidic device. This wasn't as fast as the researchers would have liked, but during these studies, they discovered that when a cell is squeezed through a narrow tube, small holes open in the cell membrane, allowing nearby molecules to diffuse into the cell.

To take advantage of that, the researchers built rectangular microfluidic chips, about the size of a quarter, with 40 to 70 parallel channels. Cells are suspended in a solution with the material to be delivered and flowed through the channel at high speed -- about one meter per second. Halfway through the channel, the cells pass through a constriction about 30 to 80 percent smaller than the cells' diameter. The cells don't suffer any irreparable damage, and they maintain their normal functions after the treatment.

Special delivery

The research team is now further pursuing stem cell manipulation, which holds promise for treating a wide range of diseases. They have already shown that they can transform human fibroblast cells into pluripotent stem cells, and now plan to start working on delivering the proteins needed to differentiate stem cells into specialized tissues.

Another promising application is delivering quantum dots -- nanoparticles made of semiconducting metals that fluoresce. These dots hold promise for labeling individual proteins or other molecules inside cells, but scientists have had trouble getting them through the cell membrane without getting trapped in endosomes.

In a paper published in November, working with MIT graduate student Jungmin Lee and chemistry professor Moungi Bawendi, the researchers showed that they could get quantum dots inside human cells grown in the lab, without the particles becoming confined in endosomes or clumping together. They are now working on getting the dots to tag specific proteins inside the cells.

The researchers are also exploring the possibility of using the new system for vaccination. In theory, scientists could remove immune cells from a patient, run them through the microfluidic device and expose them to a viral protein, and then put them back in the patient. Once inside, the cells could provoke an immune response that would confer immunity against the target viral protein.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute.

Alexandria Sardinia, Mom, Builds Batmobile For Her 1-Year-Old Daughter (PHOTOS)

"Why settle with typical store bought when DIY is sooo much better?!" Alexandria Sardinia asks on Instructables, in reference to an ultra-cool project she recently made for her 1-year-old daughter.

It's a question we've heard from other creative parents -- like Southern Disposition blogger Kendra, who made her daughter a dollhouse out of three-ring binders.

Sardinia?s creation, which is getting lots of Internet love, is an eye-catching pink-and-black Batmobile, built for her daughter Lily out of a secondhand toy car. (The little girl?s nickname is "Boo" -- hence the adorable license plate in the slideshow below.) The project cost around $20 -- and Sardinia told HuffPost over email that it only took about a day to complete. "Honestly the toughest part was keeping little nosey hands away from it while it dried," she wrote.

The mom, who goes by Cinnamontwisties on Instructables, told HuffPost that she and her fianc? are "comic book nerds," and that she dreamed up the Batmobile idea because she wanted her daughter to have "something cool of her own to match" the comic-themed decor in their house.

How did Boo react when she first saw the finished product? "Bedtime was a bit of a fight that night," Sardinia admits, explaining that after "a happy dance and squeals of happiness" it was difficult to "pry" her daughter away from the new toy.

"For a while she'd take her snacks and sippy cup and sit in it while watching TV with her feet up on the steering wheel."

If you like the project, but don't feel up to making a Batmobile yourself just yet, you may be in luck: Sardinia says the car has attracted so many compliments that she's thinking of turning the hobby into a business. She's already working on a "Fresh Beats Band"-themed vehicle for Lily's cousins -- so the fun isn't limited to little superhero fans, either.

There are also other variations of the project to check out around the web. Blogger Courtney O'Dell, who posted a tutorial for a similar undertaking last August, calls the Cozy Coupe Batmobile a "Pinterest urban legend." Yet, Sardinia's is the only one we can find with such vivid pink details and a comfy plush seat. Yep, Boo is riding in style.

BOSTON, Mass. (Jan. 21, 2013) ? BMC Switzerland, maker of well-respected bikes in the pro road peloton, partners with the NoTubes Trans-Sylvania Epic (TSEpic) mountain bike stage race. ?Presented by Dirt Rag, TSEpic is the fastest growing mountain bike stage race in North America. ?With a strong partnership between BMC Switzerland and TSEpic, the 2013 race is assured to be the best, yet.

According to Karim Pine, GM of BMC Switzerland in the USA, ?The TSEpic is a great partner for BMC because it represents the same kind of innovative, out-of-the-box thinking that drives BMC product development.? ?Matt Heitmann, BMC Switzerland?s USA Director of Marketing, chimes in, ?Like BMC, the TSEpic is breaking new ground and its directors, Mike Kuhn and Ray Adams, bring the same kind of passion and quality to events that BMC brings to its mountain bikes. On many levels, from social media to community building, the TSEpic is a forward-thinking event, and such a great platform for BMC to demonstrate its mountain bike excellence.?

BMC Switzerland?s reputation for being one of the most technologically advanced brands in the world comes from their road bike designs. ?Even though the company was originally founded to build mountain bikes and didn?t even have road bikes in their line-up just over a decade ago, BMC pushed to design and build for road riders. ?With victories in various classics such as the Tour de France and UCI?s Road World Championships, BMC?s road collection was quick to rise to the top.

BMC now returns to the dirt by building mountain designs that use the same laser focus that led to road success. ?Not only will a partnership with TSEpic be visible through BMC?s position as the official bike of the race and under the riders of the newly expanded TSEpic Team, but also through initiatives that will benefit participants of the TSEpic and for mountain bike trails and mountain bikers in the event?s home state.

Trans-Sylvania serves up some incredible lush green scenery

Located near State College, Pennsylvania, the TSEpic has garnered widespread acclaim and gains rapid popularity due to camaraderie and the world-class Pennsylvania trails. ?The race is one of few events where riders of all stripes rub shoulders for seven straight days with some of the best mountain bike racers on the continent. With the burgeoning reputation and a place at the top of mountain bike enthusiasts? bucket lists across North America, the TSEpic, along with the associated TSEpic Team, match perfectly with BMC Switzerland?s objectives to expand reach in the mountain biking world.

?We?re very excited and honored to have BMC choose to partner with us,? says TSEpic?s co-promoter, Mike Kuhn. ??The opportunity to work with BMC, such an incredibly well respected company and an undisputed leader in the industry, is a dream come true. ?BMC?s recognition of and willingness to do much more than just sponsor Trans-Sylvania, but to become a true partner in our efforts to add more for our participants and to grow the efforts of our Outdoor Experience Organization, is very invigorating. ?Plus, the opportunity to have the team aboard the 29er teamelite and fourstrokes and the enduro focused trailfox is?well, somebody pinch me and make sure I?m awake!?

Over the last several months, BMC has signed world-class riders to their mountain bike squad to represent the red and black from Switzerland at the highest levels of the sport in 2013. ?Athletes include multiple World Cup Overall Champion and 2-time Olympic Champion, Julien Absalon (FRA); Lukas Fl?ckinger (SUI); Ralph N?f (SUI); and the USA?s own, Stephen Ettinger.

The NoTubes Trans-Sylvania Epic will take place May 26 ? June 1, 2013 and includes categories for Solo, Duo, Experience and Epic Team participants. ?For more information, please visit TSEpic.com. ?To view highlights and participants? reflections on the 2012 TSEpic experience, see: TSEpic ? Summer Camp for Mountain Bikers.

One of PA's most unique trails, the exposed Tussey Ridge is a racer favorite.
