Dragon's Blood

(So a little backstory. Yesterday I was watching How to Train Your Dragon, and of course with me loving dragons, I got inspired to make something revolving around them. I've always loved dragons, ever since I was little, almost as long as I've loved dinosaurs. Once again, I have no idea if this story will take itself anywhere else or whatever, I'm just making it because... I love dragons. Dragons!!!)

The Isle of Riders

In the old days, when magic ruled the world and such, dragons were very popular back then. Either they were treasure greedy and savaged beasts, or they were the tam beasts of certain people which could be used to turn a battle to one's favor. Now though, it seems most of them have vanished from our peaceful world. We continue to watch over the remaining dragon's we have left and hope that they will grow in generations to come. The Isle of Riders is where those who are to become the next Dragon Riders live and train for possibly years before a dragon hatches. I am one such person, one of six chosen since birth. I've been living here for about four years, and my eighteen birthday is approaching. The others are excited, for they know what this means. We get to label ourselves as true riders. We get to use the one thing that is almost forbidden to be used on any human.

Dragon's Blood.

"Eric! It is time!" The Red Rider called out to me while I was busy looking into the history of riders. I furrowed my brows and sighed, closing my book as I walk out of my room and close the door behind me. There stood the Red Rider, with the Purple and Blue Riders at his sides. I was to be the Green Rider, the other two were to be the Orange and Yellow Riders. It was a sad thing, really. No one would really ever know me as 'Eric the Green Rider' in history books, but as 'The Green Rider of the 12th Generation' or something like that.

"I'm here. Let's do this." I replied to Red.

"Splendid. You will pass the test, and then, Dragon's Blood for everyone!" The other two cheered at this, so happy and proud to finally be doing this. I didn't like it, becoming half dragon to be able to ride a dragon was insane. Yet no one questioned the Laws of Riders, it was the only known way to make a human bond to his dragon. Dragon Riders had been known to go insane from this method, since the 6th Generation it had become tradition almost. Yet who among those Riders had lived long enough to warn future generations of the impending dangers that came with this? Some Riders had become corrupt because of it, others went mad and almost revealed the secret location of the isle.

"Sure. Let's go." I couldn't say no, it was my destiny. It was who I was meant to become. When we walked out of my home - The Green Rider's destined home, we could view the great castle that held so many riders in the past. The Isle was mostly covered in green, perhaps that is why the past Green Riders had grown so close to it. Or maybe it was because the rider's dragon's ancestors thrived here. Whichever the case, it was beautiful. No place on our world looked quite as wonderful any more, with the modernization of our world coming into control. As we walked towards the castle for my greatest trial, we could feel the wonderful breeze sweep over us. It felt as if angels were blowing air upon us, making us feel calm and cool, well rested and full of courage. I was not full of confidence though, I was full of doubt, I was full of fear at what we were about to become.

For the past four years, we Riders of the 12th Generation had grown to acknowledge one another as brothers, not by blood, but by our great bonds to one another. Our friendships had made us a family in a way, but now that would end. My brothers were about to become corrupted, and I was left to share the same fate. The thought continued to haunt me, I had nightmares for the past two weeks about this. My brothers transforming into some half Dragon-half Human form in the midst of battle and slaying any enemy before them. The dragons they would have would only help this, fighting alongside the rider with undying loyalty and with no knowledge of it's rider becoming corrupted. Always at the end I saw darkness come over me as I too began to change, just before I completely lost myself, I would wake up.

After several minutes of walking we entered, and as we entered into the bottom floor of the castle, the Orange and Yellow riders soon joined us. The Red Rider was the tallest among us, while also being the eldest at 19. I was the youngest and stood on par in height with the Orange and Blue riders. The others varied in size, the Purple Rider stood almost as tall as the Red, and the Yellow stood as the shortest. Once inside, the other five riders spread out and stood by a statue of the 1st Generation's riders respectively. I looked up to find the three elders standing before me, a few feet high in the air they had ascended up stairs in order to look down at our every move. They oversaw our trials, they determined who were Riders. They would also bring about my inevitable fate.

"Welcome, Green Rider." The tallest of the elders spoke, he asserted himself as the leader among the three. The most wise, the most in power and the man of destiny. "Tomorrow will be the day you turn 18. So today, we will see if the Riders are ready, or if they shall wait yet another year." I knew what he meant. We could of gotten the Dragon's Blood sooner, but our Blue rider had failed his test, leaving us another year to learn from his mistake. He had passed yesterday, so now it was my turn since I had met the age requirements now. "This last test will test you in everything you know about Dragons, while also mentally seeing if you know what it takes to be a Rider." It made me want to sleep a little, I do admit, but that would basically mean I couldn't care less whether I died or not today. "Open the gate!"

Underneath where the three Elders stood was the gate that held the dragon to test me. Once the gate opened, the beast inside was ready to come out. I have to also admit, I felt scared when I saw the beast slowly walk out, years after it's master had died and the corruption it's master had left behind had turned it from a once wise and peaceful creature, into a savage and greedy creature. It just goes to show you the Dragon's Blood theory didn't just harm the rider. The Green Dragon of the 11th Generation growled at me, it's eyes searching for any treasure on me. When it found nothing, it began to circle me, it's hungry eyes and drooling mouth made me doubt I could do this. "Rider, you will have to choose eventually." Spoke the leader Elder again.

The Green Dragon made the choice for me. It ran at me and breathed out the wispy green fire it held inside. I was lucky enough to jump to the side and just narrowly miss them as they burned a statue to ashes in just seconds. I rose up as the Green Dragon looked at me again and roared out, trying to gain an advantage over me by damaging me temporarily. I kept my focus just enough though to see it charge it's head at me, I rolled out of the way as it collided it's head with the statue and let out a cry in pain, the statue crumbling to pieces shortly after being hit. We made eye contact for a moment and I knew what had to be done. I raced towards the statue closet to me, as the other riders watched from above. I hid behind the statue as the Green Dragon collided into it again, but not as hard as it cried out briefly before taking a step back. I took this chance to push my feet against the statue and push it slowly forward, the dragon's great strength had weakened it enough for me to do this. When the dragon noticed, it was too late, as the statue came crumbling down on top of it, pinning it to the ground with it's head exposed.

"Good, Green Rider. Now, choose the fate of this dragon." I looked at the elder, holding back a glare. I knew all too well it didn't matter if you killed the dragon or not, you passed either way. If they wanted to blackmail you later on though, it could very easily happen either way. Like 'oh you didn't kill this dragon, blah blah' or 'oh, you killed this poor innocent dragon, blah blah blah' or such things like that. I walked over to the beaten dragon, looking into it's savage eyes as it struggled weakly to rise up and take me down where I stood. I knelt down beside the head as I put my hand gently on the dragon's forehead, watching it stop all motion briefly while I did this. Everyone was watching in awe, what had I just done? I stood up slowly as the dragon let out a low growl in sorrow, suddenly realizing what it had been doing.

"Hey, Red! Purple! Can you come help me?" I asked them as they rushed down the stairs on the left side of the room.

"Sure thing, Green!" The Red Rider spoke as they helped me push the rubble off of the dragon, I was only lucky Dragons were strong enough to survive boulders being dropped on them. Depending on how big they were, of course. The Red and Purple Riders were the best two I could trust out of the others, I could imagine them now. Blue was probably thinking I was soft, Orange probably didn't care and Yellow would probably try to ask if he could kill the dragon later. The Green Dragon rose once all was said and done, it then walked back into the darkness as the gate closed behind it. The other Riders came down at this, I looked up at the Elders. They looked all too pleased with the results.

"Well done, Rider. You have passed the test, and proven you all are ready to take the Dragon's Blood. Jerald, if you would be so kind..." The shortest Elder descended down to us and set down a box near us. Opening it, we all saw six syringes inside. We all looked up to the Elders as Jerald joined them. "Go on Riders, you have earned it." I knew all too well this was just the last thing they needed to hold servitude over our heads. The Blue Rider was the first to rush over to a syringe and stab it into his arm without hesitation.

"Feels good..." The Blue Rider commented. He threw the empty syringe into the ground afterword and let it shatter, seeming to enjoy this. The Yellow Rider followed next, taking a syringe and stabbing it in as well as he watched the blood enter his body. We could all tell he was enjoying it far more than the Blue Rider had. Once he was finished, he crushed the syringe in his hand and cast the pieces aside.

"Come, brothers." He said to us. "It feels right." The next was the Orange Rider, who was more hesitant than the Blue or Yellow Riders were. But slowly, he inserted the syringe into him and let the Dragon's Blood enter his body. He quickly took it out once it was empty and threw it away, seeming to pant as he walked over to the other two.

"I feel... Ill." He stated to us. The next up was Purple, who cleaned up the messes of the other syringes first before taking his own syringe. He took a deep breath before inserting it into his body. He did not watch the blood enter his body, taking it out once the blood was in and putting the syringe with the other messes. He then made his way over to the others.

"I... I think I'm getting a fever." He said. The next up was Red, who confidently took the syringe and placed it into his body, quickly letting the blood enter his body as he soon took the syringe out and put it among the others.

"It feels... Good, I guess." He shrugged and walked over to the others. Then it was my turn, as I walked over to the only syringe left and took it, feeling my hand shake as I struggled to breath. I hesitantly put it above my arm, feeling like the entire world was closing in on me as I slowly brought it down.

"Oh you idiot, let me!" I felt myself getting pushed as the Blue Rider took the syringe out of my hands and stabbed it into my arm. I screamed out as only a portion of the blood entered my body before I pushed him away. He stumbled back as his back hit the wall, the syringe shattering as the blood fell over his arm.

"Restrain the Blue Rider!" The leader Elder spoke, the Yellow and Red Riders pinning the Blue Rider to the wall as he struggled.

"What is the meaning of this?!"

"You are a fool, Blue Rider! Not only have you tried to do it for him, but you broke the syringe and have broken many traditions in just one action!"

"It is not my fault! He shouldn't of reacted the way he did!"

"It was self defense! You will be punished for this, I assure you! Everyone, dismissed!" None of us spoke to each other for the rest of the day. Blue gave me a glare before heading out. For the rest of the day, I felt ill. My back felt off as I kept myself restrained for the day. That night, I had a dream of sorts. I was flying... The air was rushing into me, it was fast. I was fast. I felt free, no longer was the Isle of Riders near me. No other Riders were near me. I felt... Like I was in heaven. That all changed when I woke up and gasped for air, sweating as I sat up. I prepared myself for the day, knowing what was ahead. I was still Eric to myself, to the others though, I was Green.

"Today is the day we see how you are developing." Jerald spoke to us, pacing back and forth as we stood all in a line. "The Dragon's Blood should have settled in over the night, and you should be able to have some power showing. It will take a while, but in time, you will learn to harness those powers and be the Riders we need you to be. Show us what each of you can do!"

"Alright, step back ladies!" Blue Rider called out to us. "Let me show you how it's done!" He was the first to go, or rather volunteer. I still didn't feel well, something inside of me was changing. We watched as Blue's arms buffed up a bit as he grabbed a boulder and tried to lift it up. He struggled for a few minutes, trying to not look pathetic or weak as he did. After a bit, he was able to just slightly lift it before putting it down and came back panting. Jerald shook his head as he watched Blue walk back to us.

"Next." Jerald called out for the next Rider to show us something. Yellow Rider went up next, shrugging his shoulders before going to show us what he had. He inhaled before breathing out, but only air came out. He huffed and he puffed three more times until he was too tired to huff and puff. He walked back over to us while Jerald sighed out in what seemed like pity.

"I'll -- I'll get it..." Yellow Rider mumbled to us. Orange stepped up to the challenge, punching the boulder that Blue tried to lift, but didn't even get a crack on it. He screamed out and ran around while holding his fist, Jerald put his hand over his face. Purple came up after this, closing his eyes as when he opened them, his eyes shifted. Jerald rose his brows at this.

"What... What do you see, Purple Rider?" He asked.

"I see... Fish. Jumping out of the waters and going back. A bird is coming near them... He just caught a fish. Wait... Colors are coming in. It's... My head is starting to hurt."

"Alright Purple Rider, that's enough."

"I... Don't know how."

"Focus, Rider. Focus!" The Purple Rider did just this, exiting out of his Dragon Vision as he nearly stumbled to the ground. Red helped him over as he had him sit down in his spot before walking over to Jerald. He concentrated as his form slowly changed. It was brief and very sudden, but his body became red briefly before returning to normal.

"Impressive, Red Rider! You are getting the hang of it."

"Almost..." He stated before walking back to us. I walked forward as I felt nervous.

"Green Rider? You don't have to do this today, you know."

"I know... But... I feel like I should do something at this point."

"Hm... If you wish. Try it out." I concentrated inside at this, on the blood now changing me. I struggled as I screamed out as something began tearing out of my back. Jerald jumped back briefly as my green wings spread out across my back as I collapsed to my hands and knees. Red rose a brow at this, I had just perfected a better transformation than he did.

"Good work, good work! You may retract them now." I felt only pain for a few, his words were hit and miss after that. I remember it being a few minutes, before I finally was able to pull the wings back in as I collapsed, shaking. "Take him to the medic at once!" The rest of the day was mostly hit and miss. That night, I remember going home. I don't remember why. I woke up from another dream though, I was flying again. I wanted to fly... So bad. When I got up and walked out, I saw... Something. I furrowed my brows and walked out to the kitchen to find some sort of creature devouring my food. It stopped when it realized I was there and looked over at me slowly.

"Green Rider..." It spoke in it's deep and demonic voice. It slowly turned around as it's wings spread out of it's back.

"What... Do I know you?" I asked the thing.

"Come now... You must remember Blue." My eyes widened as I felt myself shaking.

"Blue Rider...?" I asked.

"That's right. I'm in a sort of developing stage, but once I get more Dragon's Blood in me... I'll be ready."

"Ready for what?!"

"To transform. To ascend. Soon. Now... Perhaps I should get out of --" But before he could go on, Red and Purple tackled him down.

"Green, stay back! You don't want to look at him too closely!" Blue screamed out as he struggled around to move. The other Riders shortly came in after this. After some time, we were back in the castle, watching the restrained half-dragon/half-human Blue Rider try to break free.

"This is terrible!" Jerald said to us. "How did he more?!"

"I don't know! There was more?!?" Red asked him.

"Of course! We have them somewhere secret, but no one was suppose to know where they were but us!"

"What do we do?!" Orange asked.

"Is he stuck?!" Yellow asked.

"I am afraid he has too much... The transformation will soon be impossible to reserve."

"What do we do?!" Red asked.

"We have two options... Keep him as he is, or..." Jerald looked at Red, who's eyes widened with shock.

"No! I can't do that to him!"

"Then he shall remain as he is?"

"Well...."

"It is up to you, Red Rider." Jerald spoke to him. Red looked around at us as he gritted his teeth. He hadn't killed his dragon, nor had he killed before. He looked to Blue as he slowly took a hold of something, it looked like a stake. We all looked away as he prepared himself, Jerald stepping back as Red came closer.

"I am sorry, Blue Rider..." With that, he brought the stake down. Blue Rider's shadow struggled and screamed before the stake was twisted and the Blue Rider fell motionless. I had been watching the shadows, and when I looked back, Red had pulled the stake out and dropped it. "... By the Gods, why?" Afterword, me, Red and Purple had gone to see the leader Elder, who sat in the Elder's house. He drank something as he set down the cup before looking at us.

"So... He broke traditions, the rules... By the Gods, I am pleased you made the right choice."

"The right choice...?" Purple asked.

"Yes. Death was the only good thing for him."

"How was it...?" Red asked.

"Would you rather you have waited another year for the training, hmm?"

"Well... No, sir, but --"

"Then you did the right thing. Now, we will need to discuss the matter of the Blue Dragon egg..."

"Um... What, sir?"

"We will need to dispose of it at once."

"Sir! That is --"

"It is the right thing to do. Another Blue Rider will come in a few years, do not worry. Red, I am counting on you to destroy that egg."

".... Sir.... I...."

"Can I count on you to do this?"

".... Yes.... Sir." Red bowed his head at this.

"Good. Dismissed." It was morning before all of us met inside what was now the empty Blue Rider's home. Red seemed to have his face in his hands. Orange was leaning on a wall for support as his illness continued to get worse. Yellow stood in silence. Purple was the only one to take chances among the silence that had engulfed the five of us.

"Come on guys. We need not worry. The Gods will take good care of the Blue Rider now --"

"Phillip."

"... Excuse me?"

"He wasn't the Blue Rider when he died. He was Phillip." The Red Rider continued to comment.

"... Okay... Well... You did what had to be done, Red."

"What if the Elders are wrong though?"

"The Elders have never been wrong though."

"But they are still human! Just like us!"

"Are we human any more?! We are Dragon Blood!"

"Guys... I'm not feeling too good." Orange spoke out.

"Oh man... Alright Orange, we'll take you to the medic today."

"Thank you, Purple..."

"We'll talk later Red."

"No... We won't." Red got up and walked out, shutting the door behind him as he did. After taking Orange to the medic and doing training for the day, we all departed. That was when Red came running back to us. "Something's wrong!"

"What's happened?!" Purple asked.

"Come... We must hurry!" When we followed him to the medic, we found Orange struggling to hold on to his life.

"How did this happen?!" I asked.

"I... I don't know. I came to check on him and found him in this condition!"

"We must do something!" Yellow said to them.

"I don't think we can!"

"We must! For Orange!" For the rest of the day, we were there for Orange. But he was not Orange any more... No. He was Jeffrey. And that night, that's who he was when he passed away. The four of us bowed our heads briefly. Jerald came in and saw what had happened. Red was angry, but Jerald got away. Shortly after, Red was called in to see the leader Elder again. He walked off angry, while we buried our second brother that night. It wasn't until morning when Red finally told us how it went.

"It was horrible! He said it was natural this happened some times! Our powers are still developing in us, and he goes and says it's natural we might die?! Oh, I was angry... But I held it in. Even as he commanded me to destroy the Orange Rider's egg... I was not proud to do it. But I do feel like we should stop the Elders!"

"The Elders are right though, brother." Purple told him. "Why would they lie?!"

"I know they are... They are using us, brother! Do you not see it?! Blue's transformation - they did it to him while he was asleep!"

"How do you know this, Red?!?"

"And Orange! They poisoned him while he was resting!"

"Where is the evidence, Red!?"

"I know this! I know it from just looking at them! I had to kill one of them!"

"No one forced you to, Red! We had a choice! You made one for us!"

"I am meant to lead this team! What choice DID I have?! Yellow, Green?! Are you with me?!" He looked at us with a dark look in his eyes.

"I... Think Purple has a point." I said to him.

"So you are with him, huh? Yellow?"

"I am with you, brother. Tell me what to do and I will follow it without question."

"Good... Let us get away from these two." With that, the two went off. Purple patted me on the shoulder, but he frowned while doing it. He wasn't sure if he was making the right choice, but we had chosen our side. That day, it was just us two training. The sudden deaths of Blue and Orange still filled our heads, but we pressed them back. It was days before we saw Red and Yellow passing by just two weeks later. They were up to something. We were so close to harnessing our powers, too.

"I think the only thing you can do is fly, Green." Purple told me.

"That's... A good thing, right?" I asked him.

"Should be... Hopefully it will. I just hope --" That was when Red came bursting in to Purple's home. "Red, what is the meaning of this?!"

"Yellow... They took him down!"

"What? Calm down, Red! Tell us what has happened!"

"He killed an Elder! The fool! I told him not to do it, but he did it anyway! They put him down, made me bury the body just now! I had to destroy a third egg..."

"Brother... Tell me you two weren't planning on killing the Elders!"

"... It may have come to mind." He confirmed.

"WHAT?!"

"Listen to me --"

"No! You are obviously doing something to them, you did something! Who was it?! Who did he kill?!"

"The little short one, of course! Jerald is fine, and the leader is still breathing down my neck!"

"You fool! You will be banished! You will be an outcast for this!"

"Let it be so, then! I have had enough of the Elder's and the lies they spew at me!" He walked out before Purple could answer, slamming the door shut as Purple fell into a seat. He looked a little pale.

"... Brother? Are you okay?"

"I..." He started. "... Green. Whatever happens... If something does happen, run."

"What?"

"Take the egg you have and run. I don't know what Red is doing, but..." He paused at this. "... If something does happen, please... Get off this island. For the world's sake." He looked at me. "Please..."

"... I promise." I told him. He seemed relieved at this, but I felt wrong for agreeing to it. It was another week of training before we finally told Jerald what Red had told us. Red had been missing for a while now.

"What? Red is behind all this then... It all makes sense now."

"Elder?" Purple asked. "What do you mean?"

"He must of broken in where the Dragon's Blood was... No doubt he might of taken more by now. He must of tested some on Blue, to see how much he should take a time. He might of tried this on Orange too, it is only a guess boys, but... We did not kill Yellow. He was going mad when we found him, eating the poor Elder... We fended him off as long as we could before he suddenly stopped and died. His body wasn't able to handle it... I must warn the leader at once. Boys, you must leave the island and take the eggs with you."

"But --"

"Do not question me now. I am sorry boys... This is the only path left for us." He rushed off before we could stop him.

"What do we do now, Purple?" I asked him.

"... Go home and pack. Hurry now."

"But --"

"Do not question me. Please..." He, too, ran off. I felt sad going home and packing up my things, but... What choice did I have? I left enough room for us to carry the eggs inside. When it came to night, all was silent on the island. When I looked to the castle, I felt my heart sink for some reason. But that didn't matter, I had to get to the eggs. Reaching the cave, I looked in to only see the Purple and Green eggs left. I rushed to the Green once first and put it away. I waited for Purple, but the hours started to pass by. I studied the eggs, watched them even... After a few hours of waiting, I sniffed the air as something came to my nose. Smoke...? But then... My worse fears came to life. But then, Purple showed up.

"Green..." He mumbled, rushing over as he picked up his egg. "Leave this with me, please... You must go, now."

"What? But... Why?"

"The Elders are dead. Jerald was killed two hours ago, and the leader of the Elders just died not long ago... I barely escaped, but he is after us."

"Who?"

"Who else?" I got up and we ran towards one of the edges of the Isle. I could see fire spreading everywhere... How did this go by me? Had I fallen asleep somehow when this started? The castle, our homes... Everything was burning to the ground! I spread out my wings as I looked at Purple.

"Where are we going?"

"... We are going to the Island of the Dragons..."

"Why?"

"This place will soon be Red's Domain... We must not hesitate. We must go where we can properly train our Dragons." A large explosion of fire came in the middle of the Isle at this, and a great roar echoed out. I briefly could see Red walking towards us, he had mastered his half dragon/half human form.

"Hurry, now!" Purple shouted, as I flew into the air first, holding my stuff close to my chest. This was the most flying I had gotten yet, so I was a little unprepared when I first went into the air. Purple swiftly followed, just barely avoiding a blast of fire. I looked down briefly to see Red glaring at us, his eyes only could show betrayal. I could confirm it in my heart, at that moment, that everything said about Red had been true. He had betrayed us, he had killed the Elders and he had taken over the Isle of Riders. We flew for some time before I started feeling my wings get heavier.

"Purple... I don't think we can go on like this."

"Do not call me Purple from here on. From here on, I am P. And you?"

"Don't you have a name?"

"They told me my father never gave me one before he passed."

"Well... My name's Eric."

"Eric, huh? You still remember?"

"I never forgot who I was."

"... I see. You are lucky, Eric." After he said this, we saw a dragon fly up next to us. We hesitated for a moment or two, before I could tell who it was.

"Green Dragon?" I asked in disbelief. We heard it's voice in our heads.

Are you the Green Rider who showed me mercy? It asked. I nodded in response.

I thank you, Rider. You saved me from madness. Now, I will repay you... I offer to show you the way to the Island of the Dragons. Climb on. We did not hesitate, we got on. We were relieved, we could return to being humans briefly for the night.

"Green Dragon, tell us... Do you know why Red has done this?" P asked.

I do, unfortunately. I could tell something was going wrong, but I could do nothing to warn the Elders of this news. By the time I had gotten out, the one called Jerald had been slain. I noticed you two were leaving the Isle of Riders, and so I followed. I wish I could of done something sooner. But I will tell you everything I know... I will help you. Consider this my redemption before I pass on. Sleep for the night... You both will need it. We did as it asked, and that was the beginning of how it started. Things had suddenly changed. Our world was about to change. I didn't know what was going to happen with Red or his dragon, but I had a feeling we would need to face him again in the future. Whatever happens... I want to remember. My name is Eric. I am the Green Rider.

And so... Our Journey started.

The latest on Ronda Rousey?s move to the UFC

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will soon join the UFC. In addition to confirming this news, UFC president Dana White recently shed more light on Ronda Rousey joining the UFC.

-- She's already considered a UFC champion. The UFC bantamweight women's championship belt is being fabricated for Rousey right now.

-- Don't expect her first fight to be against onetime Strikeforce featherweight Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. Santos learned from doctors that it would be a bad idea to cut down to bantamweight. White said that the UFC is doing a women's bantamweight division, so it looks like Santos is the odd woman out.

-- Rousey will make her debut with the UFC as the main event of a pay-per-view. She has already headlined cards for Strikeforce. A date hasn't been set, but White said soon.

British aid fails to improve Nigerian schools - report

ABUJA (Reuters) - Britain has failed to make major improvements to schools in Nigeria despite spending millions of pounds on the West African state's education system, a British aid watchdog said on Tuesday.

Britain has spent 102 million pounds ($162 million) in the past seven years on a project to increase the number of girls in school and another that gave advice on how to improve the quality of education - but to little effect, the group said.

"Our review indicates no major improvement in pupil learning...with no likelihood of Nigeria meeting its Millennium Development Goal for primary education," said the report by the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI).

Western development projects in Africa have been criticised for years as wasteful, ineffective, encouraging dependency and undermined by corruption, though donors say they bring tangible results.

The London-based ICAI, which scrutinises British overseas aid and reports to parliament, gave Britain's education programmes in Nigeria its second lowest rating.

It said the schools British money was currently going to were hampered by a lack of good teachers, poor infrastructure and unpredictable state funding.

A spokesman for Britain's Department for International Development said the report team had only visited one percent of Nigeria's schools, most of which were in only one state.

"They did not take into account the most recent evidence of the projects' progress," he said. London plans to spend 126 million pounds in educational aid to Nigeria in the next seven years.

In its last major review of its education projects the department did, however, acknowledge its main education project was not proving cost-effective.

Nigeria, Africa's second biggest economy, earns $70 billion in oil revenues a year but despite growth at over 6 percent annually, almost two-thirds of the population live on less than $1 a day, leaving it 156th on the U.N. Human Development Index of 187 countries.

Hamas wins over its doubters in Gaza with battlefield prowess

Economic stagnation and political frustration steadily eroded Gazans' support for Hamas after it took over in 2006, but support is rebounding because it is seen as standing up to Israel.

By Ahmed Aldabba,?Correspondent, Christa Case Bryant,?Staff writer / November 19, 2012

Birds fly as a plume of smoke is seen over central Gaza Strip, after an airstrike by Israeli forces, as seen from the Israel Gaza border, Monday. Israel?s fresh offensive, and Hamas?s heightened ability to fight back, appears to be polishing its image in the eyes of Gazans.

Hamas?s headquarters, commanders, and weapons caches may have taken big hits in the past week, but not its popularity, which appears to be rebounding. Gazans fed up with the Islamist organization?s government of Gaza, including its high taxes, alleged corruption, and strict interpretation of Islam, have put such concerns aside to champion the group?s willingness to take a stand against Israel.

Even supporters here of Fatah, Hamas?s bitter rival, are rallying behind it.

"Hamas?s popularity is getting bigger in Gaza, not only because it has been delivering blows to Israel, but also because it is not ? [what] ignited the violence, like the previous war in 2008,? says Mustafa Ibrahim, a writer and political analyst from Gaza. ?This time Gazans are sympathizing with the resistance that's led by Hamas.?

After winning 2006 elections by a landslide, Hamas saw its support steadily slip ??particularly after the 2008-09 war with Israel, which left more than 1,300 Palestinians dead and reduced many buildings to rubble. Gazans had enormous difficulty rebuilding, particularly in the months following the war, due to an economic blockade imposed by Israel and supported by Egypt under former President Hosni Mubarak ??a policy which critics said was collective punishment aimed at turning Gazans against their Hamas rulers. Its failure to reconcile with Fatah after violently ousting the faction in 2007 also dampened local support.

Hamas shows prowess

But now Israel?s fresh offensive, and Hamas?s heightened ability to fight back, appears to be polishing its image in the eyes of Gazans.

?Of course I feel satisfied with what Hamas has done. They are doing everything possible to defend us,? says Amjad Muharram, a young engineer and Fatah supporter. ?What surprised me is the new tactics of Hamas in running the fight; their losses are nothing compared to [their] losses in the previous war. They have very effective weapons that have changed the rules of the game. They really have caused harm to Israel.?

Karam Alborno, an accountant and owner of computer shop, agrees. "In my opinion, this is the first time the Palestinians defeat Israel in a war thanks to Hamas,? he says.

While some observers have voiced concern that Israel?s campaign in Gaza could deepen residents? hatred for Israel, perpetuating the security threat posed by Gaza, Yehuda Ben Meir of Israel?s Institute for National Security Studies guffaws at the suggestion that Israel should hold back out of fear of strengthening Hamas.

?If you don?t do anything, Hamas has a free hand to continue attacking ? that line of argument has no weight. The conclusion is preposterous,? he says.

Making Israelis duck

While only three Israelis have been killed in the barrage of more than 1,000 rockets that Gaza militants have launched in the past week, some residents have had to duck into bomb shelters as often as every 10 minutes as sirens wail across southern Israel.

?Our morale is very high because Israel is finally feeling what we have been feeling, they are in panic now and spend time at shelters...? says Mr. Alborno, who hints that Hamas?s newfound support comes with conditions.

?But I hope that Hamas will change its attitude when the conflict ends. They must take care of the people in Gaza. We have been suffering from the high taxes Hamas imposed on us, the problem of electricity and unemployment; the oppression of Hamas security must end. If Hamas do this, I believe all Palestinians will be Hamas supporters."

Not ready to concede, Fla.'s West to fight defeat in House race

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tea Party-backed Republican U.S. Representative Allen West said he was still not ready to concede defeat on Sunday, almost two weeks after the November 6 election, when the clock ran out on a partial recount in South Florida.

Results showing West trailing Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy by 1,900 votes were expected to be turned over to the state Division of Elections to be ratified on Tuesday.

West was granted a recount of early ballots in St. Lucie County during the weekend, but officials were unable to complete the process before time ran out at midday on Sunday.

"Today at noon, it became clear Patrick Murphy will be officially certified as the next congressman from the 18th Congressional District," said Murphy's campaign manager, Anthony Kusich. "It is beyond time to put this campaign behind us."

Under Florida law in the event of an incomplete recount the original returns are automatically submitted for certification. St. Lucie County officials went ahead and completed the recount later on Sunday, extending Murphy's lead to 2,100 votes.

"This election is far from over," West's campaign manager, Tim Edson, said in a statement that called the results "highly suspect."

"We will continue to fight on behalf of all voters in District 18 to ensure a fair and accurate count of their votes," he added, without saying how the campaign planned to challenge the result.

West, 51, a former Army lieutenant colonel, is seeking his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where Republicans held onto their majority in the election.

With the help of the conservative Tea Party movement, West amassed one of the largest campaign war chests among House Republicans. His supporters include Americans for Prosperity, the conservative political advocacy group funded by the billionaire Koch brothers.

Murphy, 29, a political newcomer in his first congressional race, ran a surprisingly well-backed campaign focused on branding West as a divisive right-wing extremist.

Better thought-controlled computer cursor: New algorithm greatly improves speed and accuracy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2012) ? When a paralyzed person imagines moving a limb, cells in the part of the brain that controls movement still activate as if trying to make the immobile limb work again. Despite neurological injury or disease that has severed the pathway between brain and muscle, the region where the signals originate remains intact and functional.

In recent years, neuroscientists and neuroengineers working in prosthetics have begun to develop brain-implantable sensors that can measure signals from individual neurons, and after passing those signals through a mathematical decode algorithm, can use them to control computer cursors with thoughts. The work is part of a field known as neural prosthetics.

A team of Stanford researchers have now developed an algorithm, known as ReFIT, that vastly improves the speed and accuracy of neural prosthetics that control computer cursors. The results are to be published November 18 in the journal Nature Neuroscience in a paper by Krishna Shenoy, a professor of electrical engineering, bioengineering and neurobiology at Stanford, and a team led by research associate Dr. Vikash Gilja and bioengineering doctoral candidate Paul Nuyujukian.

In side-by-side demonstrations with rhesus monkeys, cursors controlled by the ReFIT algorithm doubled the performance of existing systems and approached performance of the real arm. Better yet, more than four years after implantation, the new system is still going strong, while previous systems have seen a steady decline in performance over time.

"These findings could lead to greatly improved prosthetic system performance and robustness in paralyzed people, which we are actively pursuing as part of the FDA Phase-I BrainGate2 clinical trial here at Stanford," said Shenoy.

Sensing mental movement in real time

The system relies on a silicon chip implanted into the brain, which records "action potentials" in neural activity from an array of electrode sensors and sends data to a computer. The frequency with which action potentials are generated provides the computer key information about the direction and speed of the user's intended movement.

The ReFIT algorithm that decodes these signals represents a departure from earlier models. In most neural prosthetics research, scientists have recorded brain activity while the subject moves or imagines moving an arm, analyzing the data after the fact. "Quite a bit of the work in neural prosthetics has focused on this sort of offline reconstruction," said Gilja, the first author of the paper.

The Stanford team wanted to understand how the system worked "online," under closed-loop control conditions in which the computer analyzes and implements visual feedback gathered in real time as the monkey neurally controls the cursor to toward an onscreen target.

The system is able to make adjustments on the fly when while guiding the cursor to a target, just as a hand and eye would work in tandem to move a mouse-cursor onto an icon on a computer desktop. If the cursor were straying too far to the left, for instance, the user likely adjusts their imagined movements to redirect the cursor to the right. The team designed the system to learn from the user's corrective movements, allowing the cursor to move more precisely than it could in earlier prosthetics.

To test the new system, the team gave monkeys the task of mentally directing a cursor to a target -- an onscreen dot -- and holding the cursor there for half a second. ReFIT performed vastly better than previous technology in terms of both speed and accuracy. The path of the cursor from the starting point to the target was straighter and it reached the target twice as quickly as earlier systems, achieving 75 to 85 percent of the speed of real arms.

"This paper reports very exciting innovations in closed-loop decoding for brain-machine interfaces. These innovations should lead to a significant boost in the control of neuroprosthetic devices and increase the clinical viability of this technology," said Jose Carmena, associate professor of electrical engineering and neuroscience at the University of California Berkeley.

A smarter algorithm

Critical to ReFIT's time-to-target improvement was its superior ability to stop the cursor. While the old model's cursor reached the target almost as fast as ReFIT, it often overshot the destination, requiring additional time and multiple passes to hold the target.

The key to this efficiency was in the step-by-step calculation that transforms electrical signals from the brain into movements of the cursor onscreen. The team had a unique way of "training" the algorithm about movement. When the monkey used his real arm to move the cursor, the computer used signals from the implant to match the arm movements with neural activity. Next, the monkey simply thought about moving the cursor, and the computer translated that neural activity into onscreen movement of the cursor. The team then used the monkey's brain activity to refine their algorithm, increasing its accuracy.

The team introduced a second innovation in the way ReFIT encodes information about the position and velocity of the cursor. Gilja said that previous algorithms could interpret neural signals about either the cursor's position or its velocity, but not both at once. ReFIT can do both, resulting in faster, cleaner movements of the cursor

An engineering eye

Early research in neural prosthetics had the goal of understanding the brain and its systems more thoroughly, Gilja said, but he and his team wanted to build on this approach by taking a more pragmatic engineering perspective. "The core engineering goal is to achieve highest possible performance and robustness for a potential clinical device, " he said.

To create such a responsive system, the team decided to abandon one of the traditional methods in neural prosthetics. Much of the existing research in this field has focused on differentiating among individual neurons in the brain. Importantly, such a detailed approach has allowed neuroscientists to create a detailed understanding of the individual neurons that control arm movement.

The individual neuron approach has its drawbacks, Gilja said. "From an engineering perspective, the process of isolating single neurons is difficult, due to minute physical movements between the electrode and nearby neurons, making it error-prone," he said. ReFIT focuses on small groups of neurons instead of single neurons.

By abandoning the single-neuron approach, the team also reaped a surprising benefit: performance longevity. Neural implant systems that are fine-tuned to specific neurons degrade over time. It is a common belief in the field that after six months to a year, they can no longer accurately interpret the brain's intended movement. Gilja said the Stanford system is working very well more than four years later.

"Despite great progress in brain-computer interfaces to control the movement of devices such as prosthetic limbs, we've been left so far with halting, jerky, Etch-a-Sketch-like movements. Dr. Shenoy's study is a big step toward clinically useful brain-machine technology that have faster, smoother, more natural movements," said James Gnadt, PhD, a program director in Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health.

For the time being, the team has been focused on improving cursor movement rather than the creation of robotic limbs, but that is not out of the question, Gilja said. Near term, precise, accurate control of a cursor is a simplified task with enormous value for paralyzed people.

"We think we have a good chance of giving them something very useful," he said. The team is now translating these innovations to paralyzed people as part of a clinical trial.

The Last Word: A Birthday, Chocolate, Zagat, and Clams ...

Our week in review: snippets of food, drink and fun stuff that didn?t make it in to a full post but we thought good enough to share.? Happy Friday!

Beagle-Style Birthday: Last weekend kicked off with a birthday dinner for Jon at Regal Beagle with some friends. As always, our meal was fabulous, but I discovered a new favorite appetizer: Gorgonzola-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates. I could have eaten the entire plate myself, and for $5 (for 4 dates), these little bites are a must-try.

Best of Taste Boston: Purfections chocolate. Monday brought with it Boston Magazine?s Taste Boston, where I found my new favorite chocolate. You might know by now I am not the biggest chocolate fan, but these little discs from Purefections was simply incredible. While their P2C2 (chocolate, the caramel, the peanut and potato) top-seller was featured in Food and Wine, I fell in love with their simple dark chocolate with a hint of chili powder and sea salt.? Purefection chocolates would make a great gift for any chocolate lover this holiday season (or treat yourself!).

?Event of the Week: 30 Under 30. Zagat and Google Boston partnered for Boston whose-whose-type event at the Boston Public Library to honor Boston?s top talent for under the age of thirty. The list of honorees can be found here.

Meal of the Week: Farmstead Table. We could not be happier for our neighborhood friends Chefs Chad and Sharon Burns for the recent reviews in the Globe and Improper. I discovered a new menu item last night: Clams in a mild creamy-garlic sauce with bacon. Not only where the clams delicious, but Sharon?s now-famous smelt bread was perfect for mopping up leftover sauce. Jon went with his favorite for dinner, Pan-Seared Cod (featured image). In a lovely and generous birthday gesture, the staff brought out an Apple Tart for Jon?s birthday; it was so good we were almost fighting for who got the last bite (he won, being the birthday boy ;) ).

Apple Tart

What we are looking forward to this weekend: Bourdain! Once again, Anthony Bourdain will take the stage at Symphony Hall as part of his Guts and Glory tour. If it?s anything like the show him and Eric Ripert put on last year, we are in for a treat.

Read of the Week: It?s a toss up. Read both, they are pretty hilarious.

From the BE Archives: What went down during Bourdain and Ripert?s good cop, bad cop routine in 2011.

Highlight of the Week: Being a part of #MurrayAid and help raise $6,000 for Seattle bartender Murray Stinson?s medical treatment.

In Case You Missed It?(posts from the week)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Trusted lieutenant: Reposing trust, president turns to Gilani again ...

Zardar?i visits former premie?r?s reside?nce; Gilani to head PPP?s re-electi?on bid.

Yousaf Raza Gilani receives President Zardari at Multan airport. PHOTO: SANA

MULTAN:?

With their discontent becoming increasingly vocal in the face of fresh and new cases, the Gilani family was courted by President Asif Ali Zardari and a high-powered Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) delegation at their home in Multan on Friday.

According to participants of a spate of meetings that took place later at former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani?s residence, the visit was not merely a courtesy call, but turned out to be an important one for both the PPP and Gilani.

The former prime minister has once again been given a key role in the PPP?s upcoming election blitz, which, it is said, Gilani will head. The president and the former premier had a one-on-one meeting that lasted about half an hour.

The visit follows an outburst by MNA Abdul Qadir Gilani ? the son of former premier Gilani ? on the floor of the National Assembly earlier in the week. Abdul Qadir had not only complained of harassment by state agencies, such as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), but suggested that the family had been abandoned by the PPP after his father was dismissed from office by the Supreme Court.

The notion of abandonment would have been assuaged following Friday?s visit by the president, along with a high-powered PPP delegation ? that included, among at least 10 federal ministers and parliamentarians, senior leaders such as the party?s Punjab president Mian Manzoor Ahmed Watoo, the party?s chief whip in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah as well as Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim. Provincial and national legislators from the region were also called to attend meetings.

The president assured former premier Gilani of the government?s all-out support to him and his family in all cases against them.

Gilani was disqualified for refusing to yield to the Supreme Court orders to write a letter to Swiss authorities against President Zardari. The same letter was later written by his successor, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, which is said to have disillusioned Gilani. But he seems to have been hoisted back to a pivotal role by President Zardari.

Significantly, according to participants of one of the meetings, the president told the gathering that the PPP had finalised a constitutional plan to make former premier Gilani eligible for the next polls. Currently, Gilani is ineligible to contest the next general election given his conviction by the Supreme Court, which had led to his disqualification from prime ministership as well from membership of the National Assembly. The plan, said the president, would be revealed at ?the right time?.

In the meantime, however, Gilani is said to have been given a number of pivotal tasks by the president. Participants of the meetings, as well as sources privy to the discussions, told The Express Tribune that Gilani has been given the task of heading the ruling party?s campaign to seek re-election in the upcoming polls across the country.

Upon his arrival at Multan airport, the president was received personally by Gilani, his two sons, Abdul Qadir and Ali Musa, as well as federal minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin, who is also a prominent leader from the region, and other notables of the area.

Seraiki province

The issue of a new province, widely seen to be a goal particularly close to the heart of the former premier, also came under discussion.

Sources told The Express Tribune that Gilani urged the president to push through the formation of the Seraiki province. President Zardari is said to have told the former premier that the PPP did not have the numbers to push the entire process on its own and had to evolve a consensus among some key quarters.

Gilani is said to have told the president that he would ?handle? the Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as well as all other parties and get them onboard.

Seraiki nationalist groups and leaders were also invited for meetings with the president.

According to a handout from the Presidency, Zardari reiterated the government?s commitment for the welfare of the people of South Punjab, on one hand, and to their case for a separate province, on the other.

While there was no date given for the new province, the president committed to the formation of a ?Seraiki Bank?. He said the matter had been discussed with businessmen, agriculturalists and industrialists, and would be announced before the next elections.

Other issues

Sources told The Express Tribune that ticket allocations also came under discussion ? particularly for contentious constituencies. For one, the PPP has decided to allow Mureed Hussain Qureshi to compete from Muzzafargarh. Mureed Shah, who was specially called for a meeting with the president, is the brother of former PPP leader and foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who defected to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).

Also discussed was the conflict between two central leaders of the PPP, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Jamshed Dasti in Muzzafargarh.

DII Coaches Band Together for Joplin Tornado Relief

NEW ORLEANS ? Saturday will be a day full of competition, joy, and humility in the southwestern Missouri town of Joplin. The NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships are coming to town, and, while there?s nothing new to the emotions evoked from a national championship, this event will be special for all involved.

?

The host town ? a humble place in the Show-Me State with just over 50,000 people and laying just a stone?s throw from the Oklahoma and Kansas borders ? was forever changed on May 22, 2011. That fateful day an EF-5 tornado ripped through town leaving udder devastation in its wake, destroying thousands of homes and killing more than 160 people. Hundreds more were injured, multiple school buildings and businesses were demolished or gutted, and the St. John?s Medical Center was wrecked as a result.

?

The campus of the championships? host institution Missouri Southern State University became a refuge and beacon of hope in the days, weeks, and months following the tornado. The gym that normally housed basketball games had been transformed into a Red Cross shelter. Faculty and staff from MSSU pitched in to accommodate those in need.

?

Although the NCAA selected Joplin as hosts of their third DII meet long before the storm, it became obvious to the coaches of Division II cross country to band together for the benefit of the battered town.

?

At the December 2011 convention of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) a group, headed by DII Chairman Aaron Russell of Lock Haven University, wanted to help and the ?Joplin Initiative? was born.

?

The following is a quick Q&A with Russell on the efforts that took place:

?

You were at the forefront of this idea, what were some of you thoughts on starting this drive?

?

Joplin has been such a great host for NCAA competition over the years, and many of us Division II coaches have visited on a number of occasions.? To watch the devastation on the news back in May 2011 really made me feel as though a member of my family had been in the middle of it all.? I think a lot of Division II coaches shared the sentiment.? When things really hit home for a lot of us, however, was at the 2011 Division II Track and Field championships when we all got to talk with Patty (Vavra) and Tom (Rutledge) ? head women?s and men?s coaches at Missouri Southern?and hear firsthand accounts of what they, their communities, and the Missouri Southern teams had endured.? It was heartbreaking.

?

At the USTFCCCA Coaches Convention that December, Patty and I were discussing how things have progressed in Joplin with the recovery, and the long road the community had ahead of them.? It really struck me that with Joplin hosting the 2012 cross country championships an amazing opportunity was presenting itself. I mean, Joplin had experienced this tremendous devastation, and yet they were still welcoming us with open arms.? I felt it would be a great disservice if we didn?t do something to give back to them, and I really felt that as coaches, we needed to make sure our student-athletes understood the enormity of what had happened.? Division II emphasizes the principles of service, learning, passion, resourcefulness, sportsmanship and balance to its members, and what better way to encompass all of these than through the Joplin Initiative.? It was discussed with representatives of each Division II conference, and a lot of excitement was generated.? Our goal was to talk about Joplin with our student athletes and have them get creative and organize ways to raise money.? Many teams really took on the challenge, and we?ve seen everything from t-shirt sales, raking leaves, hosting road races, and run-a-thons to donations from meet collections, entry fees, or parking charges.? It?s really been great to see how they?ve responded.

?

Katie Holmes with the NCAA has also been very supportive in our endeavor, and has offered tremendous guidance.

?

How much was raised and who benefits?

?

Checks are still coming in, but we?re just about to hit $30,000so far.? Two-thirds of the funds raised are going to the local Joplin School District to help with programs for children impacted by the tornado.? The other third is going to Missouri Southern State University?s Tornado Relief Fund.

?

The check will be presented at the awards banquet on Saturday night after the championships.? Missouri Southern?s President along with the Superintendent of the Joplin Area School District will be on hand to receive the check.? There will also be a small video presentation played showing the destruction done to the area, and the community?s efforts to recover.

?

Also, at the opening ceremonies on Friday night, flag bearers will be assigned to each team from the Joplin Area School District.?? They will also remain with the team on Saturday as they assist with collecting team?s warm ups and getting them to the finish area.? Just another great element that has been able to be worked into the championships to help teams feel connected to Joplin.

?

Overall what are your thoughts on how the efforts went?

?

We?ve had over 45 schools participate in the Joplin Initiative, which I?m very proud of.? Of course you?d always like 100% participation, but it?s still awesome to think that 45 teams across the country put hundreds of hours into helping out.? Their efforts have helped to touch many lives here in Joplin, and I?m pleased so many are going to get to see the results of all their hard work.? As coaches, I think it?s been very rewarding to see our athletes embrace this Initiative with such passion.? Witnessing their compassion, leadership, and civic-mindedness has been as rewarding as any title our teams could win.? The great thing about the Joplin Initiative being included in the awards ceremony is being able to show the athletes that they are all winners in this endeavor.

?

Can people still get involved? What?s the best route to do so?

?

We will be continuing to take donations as long as contributions come in.? Anyone interested in helping out:

The messages on Facebook told the story of the fundraising efforts. California (Pa.) raised over $2,500, Adelphi contributed $214, Edinboro throws in over $1,500 through T-shirt sales. The message played out over-and-over on the social networking site.

?

Athletes at Humboldt State raised $250 at a time with community service projects, adding the message on Facebook by saying, ?our student-athletes are gaining good experience in ?giving back? to Joplin and the community feedback has been very appreciative to our program and the NCAA for its efforts.?

?

As with all disasters, there will perpetually be heartbreak and more work to be done, but it?s the will of the people ? from both near and far ? that help bridge that gap. The normalness of life ? found in things like a cross country meet ? bring us together as a people and ushers in a way to move on from tragedy.

?

The Division II Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday with the men?s race starting at 10:30 a.m., central, and the women?s race at 11:30 a.m., central. The men?s squad at Adams State and the women?s team at Augustana (S.D.) are the top-ranked teams in the division. Live coverage of the event will be broadcast on NCAA.com.

Video: Hoda goes behind the scenes of KLG?s ?Scandalous?

>>> is a big day for a certain member of our "today" show family. kathie lee opens on broadway tonight.

>> not broadway out in iowa, we're talking about broadway in new york city . she wrote the book and lyrics to this new original musical, made every single costume that you're going to be seeing. and who better to give us a behind-the-scenes look than her partner hoda.

>> we are less than ten hours away from curtain. and i can tell you, this has been a labor of love for kathie lee . and she has mentioned her show on our show just a couple of times.

>> just a couple?

>> couple.

>> we have a little show called "scandalous."

>> let's talk about "scandalous."

>> kathie lee gifford 's musical is going to broadway .

>> yeah, baby.

>> should we sing the song?

>> hooray for hollywood . from shirley temple --

>> everybody knows shirley temple but they don't know amy simple.

>> but kathie lee 's out to change that with "scandalous," the musical based on amy .

>> she was a woman of history who has fallen through the cracks. she went on to become the most scandalous, controversial, yet celebrated woman of her day.

>> you're drifting away from the face of your fathers.

>> 12 years i've been actually physically writing it and trying to get it produced on broadway .

>> everybody agrees she was the best, though, right?

>> she was really, really strong, yeah.

>> we've had four workshops, i think. two large out of town regional productions, well over 1,000 re-writes. it's all part of the process .

>> with every chance i got.

>> carol lee carmelo in my mind is the finest working actress in musical theater . there's not another actress ibd think of that could play amy the way carol lee does.

>> this is amy 's home away from home, it's the theater on broadway . an exciting time, the crew, the cast, the team, have been working around the clock to get this baby ready for opening night . are they ready? come on, let's go backstage and find out.

>> hoda woman.

>> is it time?

>> almost. we're about half an hour from curtain.

>> wait, stage time.

>> you are center stage , this is the neil simon theater . would you like me to introduce you to some of the folks?

>> take me back.

>> this way.

>> of course.

>> we heard rumors that the hottie with the body ed watts is in here.

>> one of the highlights for many of the women.

>> do you get to see something happening beneath this robe. what could it be?

>> he plays adam.

>> wait --

>> adam and eve .

>> good to see you, bye.

>> are you talking?

>> hope he makes it for curtain.

>> opening night 's knocking on the door, are you ready?

>> i'm ready.

>> girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

>> yeah, sing a little of it. girl's gotta do what a girls gotta do a girl don't gotta do it no more

>> how does it feel being this close to opening, girl?

>> i'm scared to death. carmel my wonderful wig master is prepping my hair to be put under two wig caps, and here are my microphones which live on the back of my head.

>> in case one goes out.

>> that's right. because i never leave the stage, really.

>> you've been in this project since the infancy.

>> yeah, the early '40s. can you believe it? it's like opening night on broadway .

>> you know -- she doesn't know to kiss me or curse me.

>> you are going to sit there in the audience and watch that curtain go up on opening night . what will that be like?

>> i think that's when it's finally going to hit me. it's my child and i had a lot of help birthing it and i hope it'll live forever and touch people's lives.

>> thanks for that lovely, lovely piece. thank you, hoda.

>> so excited.

>> you're welcome.

>> we've got our tickets.

>> i am so grateful for the support around here has been unbelievable. what i'll always remember the most is you guys just -- just right there for me and supporting me and understanding what a passion this has been for me.

>> look what we have for you.

>> oh.

>> you should be getting some wine ready for the 10:00 show.

>> thank you. congrats, kath.

>> and i thought for sure that witch from philadelphia was going to win.

>> i thank you, good luck.

>> break a leg .

>> break two.

>> i'll break two chubby ones.
