'Crippled' Censorship: Comedian With Muscular Dystrophy, Promoter Detained For Using Offensive Term

Comedian Ally Bruener, who has muscular dystrophy, and her promoter Forest Thomer, were recently detained by Cincinnati police for using the word "crippled" in a public park. Thomer was later cited for disorderly conduct, the AP reports.

Bruener and Thomer were attending Party in the Park, a weekly event at Yateman's Cove, when they were stopped by police for asking people if they wanted to "laugh at the crippled girl."

"Laugh at the Crippled Girl" is the name of Bruener's web site (where she also sells t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan).

After being detained, Thomer was given the disorderly conduct citation and required to appear in court on June 6, where, according to Bruener, he was charged with using ?grossly abusive language?. Having pled "Not Guilty", Thomer is set to return to court on June 20.

Bruener described the incident in detail on her site:

For those of you who have made your way to my site after meeting me and my dear friend Forest ?T-rex? Thomer at Party in the Park at Yatemans Cove, I want to sincerely thank you for keeping an open mind and taking the time to visit my website. Sadly, I didn?t get to spread the joy of laughter with many others as I and Forest were detained by the police and forced to leave the event within the first thirty minutes of arriving.

It seems as though Cincinnati has a severe intolerance for people being proud of who they are. Apparently it is considered ?vulgar? to use the word ?crippled? in a public setting. Is society really that frightened of my self respect that they must dictate how I express it? Would it be better if I paraded around spouting the warm and fuzzy euphemistic terms that make it easier for everyone else to feel like they?re being accepting? For anyone that answered ?yes? to the second question, all I can say that I appreciate your ignorance.

Words don?t come with a stigma until they are reacted to negatively. Quick lesson: The more you use seemingly harsh words in a positive light, the faster you remove their power. Why is it not okay for me and my friends to encourage people to find humor in what most would consider hardships?

Long story, short: In the midst of many chuckles, Forest was handcuffed and escorted to a cop car. Once it was realized that I have no other way home and that it is highly unlikely that CMPD has any form of accessible transportation to jail, Forest was cited and will now be forced to appear in court on disorderly conduct charges. What kind of training does TTi provide for new Field Sales Reps?

Patrick: Everyone at TTi has access to an online library of courses on topics ranging from customer interaction to motor technology.?Initially, I took several of these online courses to familiarize myself with all of our products.? I also had another rep from the same region work with me for the first week.

Over the past two years, I have also been sent to several locations in Canada and the U.S. to participate in even more hands-on training.?Since there is so much to know about the products we sell and the applications they?re meant for, I appreciate that TTi has offered multiple opportunities for hands-on training to expand my product knowledge and ability to share that knowledge confidently.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

Patrick: As a Field Sales Representative, I manage one territory that involves a multitude of stores and locations. I am currently responsible for six Home Depot stores in the Lower Mainland and typically service one store per day, working with Home Depot associates and customers.

TTi owns several brands within Home Depot stores, so create solid working relationships with the Home Depot associates and keep them up to date on product?knowledge?because they sell our products everyday when I?m not in that particular store.

I also interact with Store Managers and Assistant Store Managers when we require extra space to showcase our products or to inform them of any changes with our products.

If I have any questions about our products or objectives, my colleagues are only a phone call away, and we sometimes work together on special events to showcase our products in-store.

I also manage returns, shelve stock, create displays and sell to customers.? There are customers in every aisle so there is always an opportunity to sell!?Being a Field Sales Rep is very hands-on, interactive and fast-paced ? you always have something on the go.?My favourite part about this position is the freedom to create my own schedule where I can work to my strengths in such a way that still completes tasks and goals.?I also like the contests that are offered as a bonus ? these contests keep us all competitive and striving to be the best rep in our region.

What has been your most memorable experience so far?

Patrick: The yearly sales conferences held in Toronto.? This country-wide conference gives us the ability to reconnect with fellow colleagues in other regions as well as offer insight to future plans and products.? I find these trips resourceful and fun.? The past few years, we have had hockey games, scavenger hunts, and even dinners and shows.

Sophos Virus Removal Tool 2.0

A recent post on Sophos's Naked Security blog celebrated the updated Sophos Virus Removal Tool 2.0 (free), noting that for 27 percent of users it found threats other antivirus products missed. That may well be, but in my own testing Sophos alone did a really terrible cleanup job.

Off to a Bad Start
Typically you'll grab a free cleanup-only tool when malware on the PC prevents installation of a full-scale desktop antivirus. It's perhaps telling that the use-case described in the Naked Security post involves running Sophos after another antivirus. With another product doing the heavy lifting, Sophos might well find leftover malware scraps.

Unlike Emsisoft Emergency Kit 2.0 (free, 3.5 stars), another free, cleanup-only antivirus, Sophos needs to be installed before you can use it. Installation is quick and easy, when it works. However, one of my test systems can only run in Safe Mode because a ransomware threat totally takes over if it boots into normal Windows. Sophos can't install in Safe Mode and hence didn't clean this system at all.

The product's main window is just a welcome screen with a button to start scanning. Automatic updates will come this fall; in the meanwhile users should just download a new copy before each use.

Sophos scans memory for active malware first. If it finds any threats it pauses and reports what it found. When you click to continue, it cleans up the threat in memory and proceeds with the scan. In some cases a reboot is needed to clean the in-memory threat, and the scan restarts automatically after reboot.

At least, that's what is supposed to happen. On four test systems, Sophos could not remove the in-memory malware. When that happens, the scan is over. There's no option to proceed with cleanup. Product Manager Shai Gelbaum explained "we had a few incidents with fast file infectors where scanning memory while malware was resident infected all the files we touched." That may be the case, but I haven't seen any other antivirus that totally abandons scanning if it can't remove in-memory malware.

Another test system displayed a different kind of problem with in-memory malware. Sophos detected it, offered to clean it, and requested a reboot. After rebooting, Sophos detected the malware, offered to clean it, and requested another reboot. I let it go through this cycle six times before concluding that it really, truly was not ever going to finish a scan.

So, for one reason or another, Sophos couldn't do anything at all to clean up half of my twelve malware-infested test systems. That's certainly a bad start.

On the systems where it managed to finish a scan, Sophos detected 81 percent of the threats and would have scored 4.7 points for cleanup. The highest score achieved using my current malware collection was 5.6 points by Emsisoft.

Under my previous malware collection, Norton AntiVirus 2012 ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars) managed 7.1 points, Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus ($39.95 direct, 4.5 stars) took 6.9, and the free, cleanup-only Comodo Cleaning Essentials (free, 4.5 stars) managed 6.8 points.

4.7 points would be an okay score for Sophos, but that doesn't factor in the systems where Sophos couldn't complete a full scan. Including all twelve systems, Sophos detected 53 percent of threats, the lowest detection rate among products tested with my current malware collection. Its score of 3.0 points barely escapes being the lowest ever. That dubious honor goes to Anvi Smart Defender (free, 1 stars), with 2.9 points.
