Scientists unpeel banana's genome

Bananas are a staple food around the world. But the humble yellow fruit faces pests and diseases that threaten to wipe it out across the globe, from convenience stores in Iowa to rural markets in Uganda.

In an effort to save bananas from imminent demise, scientists have now sequenced the banana genome for the first time, a challenging feat and a major advance in the field.

The accomplishment opens the way for developing better banana crops that are naturally resilient against parasites and other stresses.

?The banana is very important, especially for tropical and subtropical countries,? said Angelique D?Hont, a geneticist at CIRAD, an agricultural research center in Montpelier, France. ?Because the future of the banana is in danger, the sequence will help to produce resistant bananas and avoid the utilization of pesticides. It will be much easier now to identify genes which are important.?

Bananas were first domesticated 7,000 years ago in Southeast Asia. As people migrated, and crossed their own plants with other species along the way, bananas gradually became seedless, delicious and totally sterile.

Instead of multiplying through sexual reproduction, which mixes up the gene pool, bananas are cultivated through vegetative propagation, which involves simply cutting off a section of one plant to grow on its own. It?s the same process used to grow several other major African crops, including cassava, sweet potatoes and yams.

As a result, every single Cavendish banana ? the variety that makes up about half of all bananas eaten around the world ? is an exact clone of every other Cavendish banana.

The shape, color and flavor of these popular fruits are predictable and consistent. But parasites and diseases have adapted to the Cavendish, D?Hont said, making it necessary to use large amounts of pesticides to keep banana crops from collapsing ? up to 50 applications a year in some places.

To decipher the banana?s genetic strengths and weaknesses, D?Hont and a large group of colleagues spent two years sequencing a variety of banana called Musa acuminate, which is a simpler relative of the Cavendish.

HOWSTUFFWORKS: Learn All About the Banana

Once they put together the sequence, the researchers report Wednesday in the journal Nature, they discovered several genes that may be involved in pest resistance.

Among other findings, the researchers identified genes involved in ripening after the application of ethylene, which is often added to green bananas during transport. The sequence also revealed that the banana duplicated its entire genome three times (making an extra copy of every single gene in its genome) ? including once 100 million years ago and once 60 million years ago

Putting together the sequence took so long because, compared to many other crops, the banana genome is extremely complex. Even though all bananas are clones of each other, the original gene forms that came from mother and father plants remain different from each other ? unlike in seeded crops that tend to become inbred, said Simon Chan, a plant biologist at the University of California, Davis.

What?s more, bananas have three copies of each chromosome, just like other seedless plants. And for many genes, all three copies are different.

The variety of banana used in the new study had just two of each chromosome, making it simpler than the Cavendish. But by finally deciphering its sequence, scientists will be able to move on to our beloved breakfast fruit and compare the differences.

Knowing the genetic sequence of bananas is a major step toward isolating key genes that will eventually lead to a better banana, Chan said. Future varieties may be able to resist both droughts and diseases, while still tasting good and traveling well.

Those developments are especially important in the developing world, where starchy varieties of bananas supply substantial amounts of calories to the human diet, especially in Uganda and other East African countries. There, Chan said, losing the banana crop would be a humanitarian disaster.

?This is a nice example of how these projects can greatly benefit crops that we might not think about as being important in the developed world but are really, really important for food security and human welfare in developing countries,? Chan said.

?It?s like a moral imperative for us to work on these plants and sequence the genomes of more of the species that are significant in those parts of the world.?

Weight gain after quitting smoking higher than previously thought

ScienceDaily (July 10, 2012) ? Giving up smoking is associated with an average weight gain of 4-5 kg after 12 months, most of which occurs within the first three months of quitting, finds a study published on the British Medical Journal website.

Although this figure is higher than previously thought, an accompanying editorial argues that the health benefits of quitting far outweigh this modest gain in body weight and should not deter people from quitting.

It is well known that giving up smoking is often followed by an increase in body weight, but estimates vary. Concern about weight gain is also widespread among smokers and it may deter some -- particularly women -- from trying to quit.

So a team of researchers based in France and the UK analysed the results of 62 studies to assess weight change among successful quitters -- with and without the help of nicotine replacement therapy -- after 12 months.

In untreated quitters, the average weight gain was 1.1 kg at one month, 2.3 kg at two months, 2.9 kg at three months, 4.2 kg at six months, and 4.7 kg at 12 months.

This is higher than the typical 2.9 kg often quoted in smoking cessation advice leaflets and more than the 2.3 kg many female smokers report being willing to tolerate, on average, before attempting to quit, say the authors.

However, the changes in body weight varied widely, with around 16% of quitters losing weight and 13% gaining more than 10 kg after 12 months. This, say the authors, indicates that the average value does not reflect the actual weight change of many people who give up smoking.

Estimates of weight gain for people using nicotine replacement therapy were similar, as were estimates from people especially concerned about weight gain.

Previous reports have underestimated the average amount of weight gained when people stop smoking, they conclude. "These data suggest that doctors might usefully give patients a range of expected weight gain."

They suggest that further research is needed to identify the people most at risk of gaining weight and to clarify the best way to prevent continued weight gain after quitting.

In an accompanying editorial, experts from the Catalan Institute of Oncology/University of Barcelona and University of Sydney say that more data is needed to settle this question, and they point out that previous studies have shown that many smokers gain more weight than never smokers for a few years, but then the rate of weight gain falls to that seen in people who have never smoked.

"Although obesity is positively associated with an increased risk of all cause mortality, cohort studies indicate that modest weight gain does not increase the risk of death; smoking does," they conclude.

Pebble Project threatens Alaska's 'Red Gold'

KING SALMON, AK ? America gets over 60 percent of its seafood from Alaskan waters. Now a proposed open pit mine, which would be one of the largest in the world, has some residents here concerned. They?re worried that regardless of the economic benefits, giant ponds that would be used to store waste from the mine could pollute Alaska?s pristine waters.?

Glen Alsworth, Sr., is at the center of the mine debate firestorm that is pitting fisherman against villager, politician against sportsman, and environmentalist against businessman.
?
Alsworth is in the crosshairs because of his role as Chairman of the Lake and Peninsula Borough assembly, one of the 16 boroughs in Alaska. The equivalent of being a County Executive in other states, his support of the Pebble copper and gold mine in the region would carry a lot of weight.
?
Alsworth?s clout also stems from the fact that his father was a pioneer settling the area on Lake Clark now known as Port Alsworth, AK, in the 1940s.? And because today, the 58-year-old commercial pilot is a successful businessman in the region with 50 people employed in several travel-related companies.
?
Often called Mayor, Alsworth says he is one of the 1,500 residents in his borough living near the potential mine site.
?
?Initially, I was very supportive of the project,? says Alsworth. ?I am now avowed neutral, awaiting a site specific detailed plan, so I can make an intelligent response to a concrete proposal.?
?
Referred to as The Pebble Project, the proposed mine has been controversial from the very beginning, when exploration picked up in earnest in the 1990s.?
?
Since then Alsworth has met many times with representatives of the mine owners, The Pebble Partnership, whose preliminary plans propose the mining and processing of 10 billion tons of ore, which if approved, would be among the world?s largest.
?
Construction of the mine at Pebble would be massive, taking years and costing billions of dollars. It will require many miles of roads and bridges across vast wilderness, pipelines for fuel and water, large amounts of electricity, and construction of perhaps the second largest earthen dam in North America to contain the toxic byproducts of the mining process.
?
The Environmental Protection Agency has raised questions about potential risks but is weighing whether to prevent the construction of the Pebble mine. The fate of southwest Alaska?s lifeblood -- fishing in the Bristol Bay watershed, which is home to the biggest run of wild salmon in the world -- is at stake.
?
The locals refer to the run of tens of millions of salmon each year as ?Red Gold,? because it produces hundreds of millions of dollars in the annual revenue of commercial fisheries.
?
Sport fishing is also an important part of the area's industry. Alsworth owns one of many lodges catering to sport fishermen exploiting the tremendous salmon populations. The native Alaskans in the Bristol Bay region also rely on harvesting of salmon for year-round subsistence. In all, 7,500 people live in the Bristol Bay region near the proposed mine.
?
Opponents argue that the mine would pollute and threaten the entire Bristol Bay watershed. Proponents argue that the project is already creating desperately needed jobs, and will provide much needed tax revenue, too.

?Brain power short circuited by wild emotion produces a lot of noise, flaring tempers, personal attacks and much mudslinging,? say Alsworth, ?but not many tangible, productive solutions.? ?Instead of being threatened by obstacles,? Alsworth says he is ?energized to craft solutions.?? Alsworth recommends that any development capable of harming water supplies be required to place monitoring devices in all waterways that can be policed 24/7 by anyone via the Internet.

According to their website, the mine owners say they are committed to developing a world-class mine environmentally sound, and economically beneficial to the people of Southwest Alaska.
?
Just about every living person in the small villages in the Bristol Bay watershed will be impacted by the EPA?s decision on whether or not the mine project gets a green light -- but perhaps no one as much as Alsworth.
?
An entrepreneur at heart, in addition to the lodge that caters to nature goers and sport fishers alike, Alsworth owns a small air service.? He acknowledges that he is hedging -- planning for either outcome.
?
In addition to ferrying tourist who come to the largest state in America seeking outdoor adventure, he also makes money transporting those affiliated with the mine drilling test wells, providing logistical support, etc. ?Seven out of every 100? passengers he flies in the region are ?associated in some way or another with the Pebble mine project.?? But Alsworth is realistic about the impact his leadership role in the community will play in the final outcome.

?I think there are some folks out there that think it?s a dictatorship or that I?m a King,? says Alsworth. ?If I say, it?s going to go, it?s going to go. Or if I say, it?s going to stop, it?s going to stop. Realistically, the Supreme Court can do that, I cannot.?

Alsworth?s decision may not be the final word, but much like his father?s pioneering days, his actions may have a major impact on the next generation.

Civilization V: Gods & Kings

Expansion packs have been available for PC games for more than 20 years now, but it?s difficult to think of another that has effected a more elemental transformation on its base title than the first for Sid Meier?s Civilization V. The addition of Gods & Kings ($29.99 list) helps it not only live up to its name, but also lets the 2010 original realize more of the promise that has until now eluded it. If Gods & Kings is too limited in scope to utterly revolutionize this chapter of the storied conquer-the-world saga, it?s nonetheless good enough to make Civilization V the game it always should have been.

This is no small achievement. Civilization V was most notable not for what was in it, but what wasn?t: the character, color, and complexity that had routinely defined the previous entries in this quintessential strategy series. Whereas each of the others since the first (in 1991) had built on and developed the underlying elements of what it meant to found and nourish an opposition-crushing empire (or fade into obscurity trying), the fifth chapter pulled everything back to a safer, more sedate distance, where many concepts that had been crucial were either downplayed or deleted altogether. It seemed as though Firaxis Games was so hungrily eyeing the board-gamer and first-timer markets that it stopped caring about whether the newest Civilization was a great Civilization, so the result was at most good?and just barely that.

Gods & Kings does more than I?d imagined any post-facto release could to restore the balance between detail and accessibility. Although it adds or revises plenty of content?there are nine new civilizations, about 20 new buildings and wonders, nearly 30 new units, and myriad adjustments to the technology tree?it?s its biggest swipes that dazzle most and make Civilization V not just worth playing, but worth re- and re-re-playing in a way it?s never been before.

That Old Time Religion
Central to the revisions of Gods & Kings is the reappearance of religion, the baffling absence of which was one of Civilization V?s blackest features. It?s been added in two separate ways: as an activity you pursue, first by creating a polytheistic pantheon that confers minor benefits and then graduating to a more specific and structured system (with more useful rewards); and as the new Faith resource, which gives you a new way to add units, construct buildings, and deal with the other rulers and city-states you?ll encounter during play. (The new Great Prophet unit is instrumental in spreading and advancing religion as ordinance and ordnance.)

Religion is, as history dictates it should be, vital in the early game, when the weblike pattern of the various beliefs? march across the globe becomes its own kind of arms race. Its geopolitical impact lessens as the centuries pass, but it beautifully fulfills its role as the force for good and evil it?s been throughout humanity?s history. Gods & Kings doesn?t integrate religion as fully into the action as Civilization IV did, but its having a prominent role once again represents a thrilling return to First Principles that should never have been abandoned.

I Spy
Much the same is true of espionage, which has also made an impressive comeback. You?re awarded spies as the centuries tick by (or you meet other criteria, such as constructing the proper wonder), and you can use these to either steal other civilizations? technologies, protect your own, or uncover intelligence that will help you barter and bait your enemies. There?s an unfortunate passivity to the handling of all this?one would think that international spying would be more hands-on and exciting?but it makes both overt and covert relations with your opponents feel real and vital once again.

Tweaks and Scenarios
Everything else in Gods & Kings is secondary to these changes, but there's no major misstep to be found. Some nice tweaks come with city-states: They now utilize a stronger quest system that more seamlessly encourages interaction with the major players; and two more characteristics for them (Religious and Mercantile) add extra flavor to Civilization V's one pioneering mechanic. Naval combat is more focused now, with ships divided into two different types (melee and ranged) that make attacks from the sea more threatening than before; another new Great Person type, the Great Admiral, gives you some extra options while sailing the seas as well. Three new scenarios provide excellent pre-fab adventures, with the all-out steampunk ?Empires of the Smoky Skies? being the most deftly designed and compelling. Enemy AI for single-player run-throughs has been fixed, so you get more satisfying challenges at the higher difficulty levels. Everything about Civilization V is now just better.

That said, it?s important to note that any expansion pack, even one this extensive, can only do so much. Religion and espionage may be back, but they still feel more like they?ve been shoehorned into the existing structure rather than that they?re occupying the pride of place they should have had from the start. If you?ve never warmed up to many of the new rules (such as unit stacking, or lack thereof), there aren?t sufficient rethinks or revamps here to convince you otherwise. And despite all you get, Gods & Kings doesn?t come with all the maps and civilizations that came with previous downloadable content packages?you still have to purchase those separately if you want everything.

A Civilized Update
Regardless, Gods & Kings is a must-have for all Civilization V owners?whether fans or detractors. It may have its own imperfections and inadequacies, but it addresses and corrects more egregious faults from the original than any gamer had any right to expect. Many players?myself included?will still find themselves longing for the epic, engrossing intricacy of Civilization IV, as you don?t get all of that with this restricted conception. But without Gods & Kings, you?re simply not experiencing Civilization V at its best.
