Structured Settlements and a Chance to Win $1,000! - The Free ...

You heard that right?.let?s give away some moolah.

First, though, a thought about structured settlements. What is a structured settlement? These occur usually when two parties settle (often it?s when there?s an accident) and the insurance company agrees to make ongoing payments for a set length of time. Often, these will be monthly payments, but sometimes they?re annual, quarterly, or irregular.

Take this giveaway for example. What if you could either have $1,000 now or 15 annual payments of $100 each?

When I was an advisor, I became a pro at helping clients choose between a structured settlement and a lump sum. Lump sum? Where did that come from?

Well, while there aren?t lump sum offers in these deals, there are companies that can turn your structured settlement into a lump sum. In short, you hand over the rights for them to receive the structured settlement in return for cash they hand you now.

In all reality, deciding whether to accept a lump sum wasn?t difficult. Here?s the magic formula:

1) I compared the lump sum number to the monthly payment.

2) If you invested the lump sum, what return on investment would you need to duplicate the structured settlement yourself?

3) I then looked at your need for cash. How likely is it that you?ll need more than the lump sum now?

4) Finally, I thought about the likelihood that the company will pay your entire settlement. If they become bankrupt, you may not receive all of your money. How likely is it that this will happen? While I never had inside information, Google was a wonder in this area. Also, if it was a long, drawn out settlement, I was more likely to recommend cash up-front because who knows what the future will bring?

Generally speaking, if we could find a way to get cash to my client quickly, we?d choose that option?but not without working through the four points above.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Android 4.1.1 update now available in the US

If you?re in the US and own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 or a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, you should be really excited, because the update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean is now available for both of these devices. We are of course referring to Wi-Fi-only units and not those with bundled data connectivity sold by carriers ? those will get their updates on a different schedule.

A couple of months after such an update started rolling out in parts of Europe, the first iteration (and hopefully not the last) of Jelly Bean for Samsung?s two tablets is now waiting to be installed by you, either via Kies or via OTA. Kies is Samsung?s desktop PC software, which can help you update your tablet.

Alternatively, you can wait for an update notification to be shown by your device, after which you can download and install the 311 MB update right on the tablet, with no need for a computer. In case you want to do things over-the-air but haven?t been notified about the update yet, you can naturally manually check by going to Settings > About device > Software update.

No official changelog has been spotted (at least not yet), but expect to see all the goodies introduced with the 4.1 version of Jelly Bean (Project Butter, Google Now, improved notifications, enhanced performance overall, etc.) plus Samsung?s love-it-or-hate-it TouchWiz UI layer sitting pretty atop.

(AP) ? Around 40,000 revelers are expected to turn out for the two official balls that celebrate President Barack Obama's second inauguration.

That's the lowest number of inaugural balls since Dwight Eisenhower was first sworn into office in 1953. But the two official celebrations the night of Jan. 21 will be elaborate nonetheless.

The larger of the events, simply called The Inaugural Ball, is expected to draw more than 35,000 in a reflection of the quadrennial demand in Washington to toast the president in person on such a historic day.

The Inaugural Ball is being held across all 700,000 square feet of the Washington Convention Center's five exhibit halls, which four years ago held six separate balls.

The second event is the Commander In Chief's Ball, a tradition started by President George W. Bush to honor the military. Doubling in size from four years ago to about 4,000, it's being held on the third-floor ballroom of the convention hall a mile from the White House. Tickets are free for invitees, including active-duty and reserve troops, Medal of Honor recipients and wounded warriors.

Demand has been high for entry to the two official affairs. Inaugural planners offered a limited number of tickets to The Inaugural Ball for sale at $60, and they sold out quickly Sunday night when Ticketmaster accidentally sent out an email ahead of time announcing they were available. Inaugural organizers are trying to stop a swift scalping business for the tickets, which have been cropping up for sale online.

That's even though city officials are predicting a drop in attendance to 600,000 to 800,000 for the inauguration this year compared with 2009, when a record 1.8 million crowded onto the National Mall to see the first black president sworn into office.

Those who can't get into the convention hall with the Obamas can still carouse into the night at several unofficial balls across Washington. And members of the president's staff will get their own chance to celebrate with the president, with a staff ball planned for the day after the inauguration. Last year, the private affair was reportedly quite a bash, according to one attendee, with rap star Jay-Z singing a riff on one of his hit songs, "99 Problems but George Bush Ain't One," to the delight of the throngs of young staffers who worked so hard to turn the White House Democratic.

More tickets to The Inaugural Ball will be on sale, but not to the general public. They will go to campaign volunteers, community leaders, elected officials and other invitees, as well as donors being asked to contribute up to $250,000 individually or $1 million from corporations to pay for the festivities. Invitees will be sent an email in the next few days with personalized Ticketmaster account information they can use to purchase up to two tickets.

The Inaugural Ball's halls extend across two floors, so the president and first lady plan to spin on the dance floor of each level. At the Commander In Chief's Ball, the president and first lady plan to continue the tradition of dancing with members of the military.

Inaugural planners said the cut in the number of balls was to reflect tough economic times and minimize the burden on law enforcement, other security personnel and Washington residents. But could it also be an effort to give the president some relief from having to dance to the same song over and over again all across town on an already exhausting day?

President George W. Bush didn't hide his annoyance after his second inaugural at having to repeatedly sashay around to a musical medley that included "I Could Have Danced All Night." Could have, but did not: He and first lady Laura Bush danced for a cumulative total of just 8 minutes, 54 seconds across 10 galas.

Job Searching Tips For Soon To Be College Graduates ...

first_impressionsHave a Job Searching Game Plan:

The job searching process takes time?months in fact, so if you decide this is the route you want to take after college, it?s important to get a head start senior year if you want to have a job lined up after graduation. If you?re not sure exactly which job types you?re looking for, make some time early during the year to figure it out. Schedule an appointment with a career advisor to hone in on your career interests, schedule a meeting with a professor to discuss career paths or set up some informational interviews with professionals in your field to learn about different job titles and careers in the industry. Make a timeline for your senior year as you prepare to enter the workforce. Set deadlines for yourself for when you?ll meet with a career advisor or professor to discuss job titles, practice interviewing techniques, create a professional resume, cover letter and LinkedIn Profile, attend job fairs coming to campus, contact recruitment agents and begin searching for open positions.

Make Decisions:

If you?ve decided (or you?re still considering) entering the job market upon graduation, you have several things to consider. Think about where you want to live and work upon graduation?are you only looking in one city or are you willing to relocate if you find a job elsewhere? What industries are you trying to get into and which entry level job positions will you seek? What types of companies are you targeting? Make decisions that will focus your job search and keep you on track, but stay open to new opportunities if they come up.

Last-Minute Boosters:

If you realize your resume is looking empty or you haven?t yet partaken in an internship or part-time job, now?s the time to do it. Senior year isn?t too late to step into a leadership role in an extra-curricular group you?ve been part of or to find an internship during the school year or part-time job. It?s important to have some experience when applying for jobs.

Networking:

Don?t wait until after graduation to start networking. Senior year you should start talking to family and friends about your intentions post-graduation and the career path you?d like to pursue. Let them know what kinds of positions you?ll be looking for so they can keep an eye out for you if anything turns up or refer you to anyone they know in the business. Most people are happy to help new graduates and provide advice so don?t be afraid to ask.

If you stay on track and start your job search early on, you?ll be on your way to starting a new job upon graduation!
