Heavy snow belts Rockies and Plains; Texas city to see 67-degree temperature drop

A blast of cold air being dragged southward by a dip in the jet stream threatened the Rockies, Plains and parts of the Midwest with spring snowfalls this week that meteorologists said could be ?historic.?

Nearly two feet of snow is forecast for the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, where heavy snow started falling Tuesday. Several inches could also fall by the end of the week in a band from Texas to Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

Some portions of the Plains and upper Midwest regions, including Wisconsin and sections of Minnesota, could see a flurry of wet snow on Wednesday night into Thursday, Weather.com reported. A light early May dusting may even be seen as far south as the Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma.

Cheyenne, Wyo., had already received more than 6 inches of snow early Wednesday morning, Weather.com reported.

With the jet stream bowing to the south, cold air is being sucked deep into the country, bringing temperature changes that may seem downright cruel to many, according to meteorologists at weather.com.

Amarillo, Texas, is the perfect example. On Tuesday it hit a high of 97 degrees.

?By tomorrow morning we have ? Amarillo at 30 and probably snowing,? Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth said. ?So in Amarillo we?re projecting a 67-degree drop from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday morning ? so summer to winter.?

Minneapolis, Kansas City and Des Moines, Iowa, have been basking in the 70s and 80s. They?ll be lucky to see 40 through the end of the week, weather.com said. And Chicago just had its first 80-degree day of the season. It should have another on Wednesday before highs drop to the 50s and low 60s through the weekend.

The heaviest snowfall will be along the Front Range of the Rockies, with an area from central Colorado to southeastern Wyoming under winter storm warnings that call for up to 20 inches of fresh snow through Wednesday night. Just to the east, cities in the foothills, including Denver, could see five to eight inches of accumulation during the period, and roads could become icy and snow-packed, the weather service said.

Further east, where the cold air meets the warm, severe thunderstorms are likely Wednesday in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, according to weather.com, which adds that the threat diminishes Thursday, with ?marginally severe? storms possible in parts of Texas and southern Louisiana.

Travel disruptions could come with the worst parts of the storm, with Interstates 25 and 80 between Wyoming and Colorado in line for possible snow and ice, Roth said. But as of Wednesday morning, FlightAware.com listed only 16 canceled flights in the region, all at Denver International Airport.

?That will probably go up during the day,? Roth said.

While the storm may set some snow records, May is often a fickle month. Heavy snow is fairly rare, but temperatures in different parts of North America can range radically, Roth said.

Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, Ontario, for example, will be 30 to 40 degrees warmer on Thursday than normally toasty Oklahoma City, he said.

Cheyenne, Wyo., which hit 70 degrees Tuesday afternoon, was on the verge Wednesday of breaking its May snowfall record of 14 inches, Roth said.

?Cheyenne had eight inches as of midnight their time, and it?s been snowing steadily since that,? he said. ?We think they?re going to end up with a good 12 to 18. ? Welcome to May, right??

Playable art by Brent Watanabe features acrylic hand-painted canvases mounted on a wall which function as the setting for a video game, with sprites projected onto their surfaces:

In for( ){ };, there is no beginning or end to the game, just collecting and wandering, birthing and consuming, an arbitrary point system rising until your inevitable death and the birth of another generation. It is a game mechanism without the game. An addictive but essentially aimless experience.?
The piece is a triptych of playable acrylic paintings, controlled by the viewer using a NES controller.

After discovering this, the artist then made a series of prints in which Marilyn's image is re-created using visual elements drawn from video game culture.

Zetterstrand?s work (since 2002) has combined space, perspective, historical fine art and the presentation of video games. As the artist explains,

I work with painting. For some years I have experimented with virtual still lifes, often in the form of stage design in which I explore how two-dimensionality (and painting) relates to computer-generated 3D worlds. I am interested in visual spaces created online, in computer games and 3D programmes, and especially in what happens when the illusion is shattered and the underlying construction emerges -like when there is a bug in a computer game. I am interested in visual failures, which I try to use in my painting. Among other things, I have produced paintings based on the landscapes that you can see only if you are ?dead? in the online game Counter-Strike, and paintings with motifs created by crashed landscape generators used in film and computer game production. Presently my work process is like this: I start by sketching the motif in 3D on the computer, where I can move the scene about, rearrange pictorial elements, redirect the light, reposition the camera, and so on. I sculpt the architecture and the various parts of the environment and dress the parts in different textures, which I often sample from images of my own earlier paintings, from pictures I have found on the net and screen dumps from computer games. I also use a lot of material from my art archives, which comprises some sixty-thousand paintings. While working with a sketch on the computer, the simpleness of the tools means that I can follow my impulses and try out new angles, change backdrops and pictorial elements, redirect the light, rearrange the shadows, etc. For me, the 3D programme is a tool that I use intuitively when I construct my motifs. The scenes are often influenced by the dramatic composition of computer games, where familiarity with some kind of mythology is essential in order to play the game, in a similar way as an artist relates to art history. That the end result is painting is a prerequisite of my work. The physical aspect of painting and the space it allows for improvisation and painterly reformulations of the motifs are the most important parts of the process. You could say that when it comes to the painterly part of my work process, I improvise on a theme that I have determined on the computer.?

New simulation speed record on Sequoia Supercomputer

Apr. 30, 2013 ? Computer scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have set a high performance computing speed record that opens the way to the scientific exploration of complex planetary-scale systems.

In a paper to be published in May, the joint team will announce a record-breaking simulation speed of 504 billion events per second on LLNL's Sequoia Blue Gene/Q supercomputer, dwarfing the previous record set in 2009 of 12.2 billion events per second.

Constructed by IBM, the 120-rack Sequoia supercomputer has a peak performance of 25 petaflops per second and is the second fastest supercomputer in the world, with a total speed and capacity equivalent to about one million desktop PCs. A petaflop is a quadrillion floating point operations per second.

In addition to breaking the record for computing speed, the research team set a record for the most highly parallel "discrete event simulation," with 7.86 million simultaneous tasks using 1.97 million cores. Discrete event simulations are used to model irregular systems with behavior that cannot be described by equations, such as communication networks, traffic flows, economic and ecological models, military combat scenarios, and many other complex systems.

Prior to the record-setting experiment, a preliminary scaling study was conducted at the Rensselaer supercomputing center, the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI). The researchers tuned parameters on the CCNI's two-rack Blue Gene/Q system and optimized the experiment to scale up and run on the 120-rack Sequoia system.

Authors of the study are Peter Barnes Jr. and David Jefferson of LLNL, and CCNI Director and computer science professor Chris Carothers and graduate student Justin LaPre of Rensselaer.

The records were set using the ROSS (Rensselaer's Optimistic Simulation System) simulation package developed by Carothers and his students, and using the Time Warp synchronization algorithm originally developed by Jefferson.

"The significance of this demonstration is that direct simulation of 'planetary scale' models is now, in principle at least, within reach," Barnes said. "'Planetary scale' in the context of the joint team's work means simulations large enough to represent all 7 billion people in the world or the entire Internet's few billion hosts."

"This is an exciting time to be working in high performance computing, as we explore the petascale and move aggressively toward exascale computing," Carothers said. "We are reaching an interesting transition point where our simulation capability is limited more by our ability to develop, maintain, and validate models of complex systems than by our ability to execute them in a timely manner."

The calculations were completed while Sequoia was in unclassified "early science" service as part of the machine's integration period. The system is now in classified service. Sequoia is dedicated to the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program for stewardship of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile, a joint effort by LLNL, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. The ASC program provided time on Sequoia to the LLNL-Rensselaer team as the capabilities tested have potential relevance to NNSA/DOE missions. This work also was supported by LLNL's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

The HR Consulting market in India is in a state of churn. NS Rajan (Blog, Twitter) who built the largest HR consulting practices in India, is joining the oldest and one of the most sprawling Indian conglomerates (which makes everything from salt to steel to software (with a revenue of $100 billion) the Tata Group as group chief Human Resources Officer and will be reporting to the new Chairman, Cyrus Mistry.

The HR Consulting industry in India is seeing a churn. Ganesh Shermon who was Rajan's counterpart in KPMG has also left, and the Mercer India head Nishchae Suri is replacing him.

Mercer's Rajiv Krishnan is joined E&Y as HR Advisory Partner in October and is seen to be Rajan's successor.

Eight months ago Smita Anand (ex-Hewitt HR Head) joined Korn/Ferry in India whereas Dhruv Prakash who was heading India Leadership Consulting at Korn/Ferry left in November to be self-employed.

A new report indicates that Sony could launch two new flagship devices in the second half of the year, with the devices currently known as the Togari and Honami.

Naturally, this is just a rumor for now, so, as always in such cases, take everything that follows with a grain of salt.The Togari is said to sport a Full HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) 6.44-inch display and offer a design similar to the already launched Xperia Z. The handset (phablet if you will) would come with a very slim profile like the Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z products and will feature a back made from glass.

The Togari would be available ?at least? in white, and could ship as early as July in Sony?s home country, or right in time to take on the Galaxy Note 3. Or better said, right in time to beat the Galaxy Note 3 to market by a few months, Samsung?s upcoming high-end player in the big smartphone business ? of course, assuming that this new rumor is accurate. Coincidentally, the Xperia Z was launched well ahead of the Galaxy S4.
The Honami is also an interesting proposition, at least according to this new set of rumors. The device is supposed to be a ?One Sony? model, where ?One Sony? stands for all the best tech Sony would have to offer.
The Honami would pack a 5-inch 1080p display, ?dedicated Walkman audio chip? and a 16- or 20-megapixel CyberShot CMOS sensor with Carl Zeiss optics (Xenon flash and dual LED are also mentioned0. Even more interestingly, the Honami could pack a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, Adreno 330 graphics, 2GB of RAM and 2700 to 3000mAh battery.

This unicorn device could also pack a ?Triluminous display.? What?s that you ask? VR-Zone explains:
TRILUMINOS is Sony?s exclusive new technology that allows for far greater color tones and textures to be displayed on the screen. In simple terms you could think of TRILUMINOS as simply a bigger box of color pencils to draw an image on the screen. A conventional display only has a limited box of color pencils to draw an image, whereas a TRILUMINOS display has a bigger box of color pencils with more shades of Blue, Red and Green color pencils.
As a result a TRILUMINOS display can reproduce more natural colors thanks to the expanded color gamut and display various shades of colors closer to reality than a conventional display. A TRILUMINOS display can output true, natural shades of colours ? like hard-to-reproduce reds, greens and blues. Faces look better, too, with rich, lifelike skin tones.
Like the Togari, the Honami would also be launched as early as July in China, and hit international markets later in August or September.
This collection of rumors comes via China, from a person that said on Baidu he?s a tester for Sony Xperia devices but also from local commerce site ePrice, while VR-Zone provided details on Sony?s supposed inclusion of the Triluminous display technology in future Xperia devices.
In other words, while these reports have certain elements in common, it?s too early to paint a clear picture for what the Togari and Honami, so don?t get too excited about these handsets just yet.
