First Person: Northeast Winter Storm Weather in Rhode Island

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | NEWPORT, R.I. -- Here on the coast, we're preparing for what has the potential to be a storm as severe of the great blizzard of 1978. Almost 35 years ago to the day, that storm left massive amounts of snow on the entire northeastern United States; it's a story parents tell their children like some great tale. Today, children might have a story to tell their kids years from now.

Grocery stores and supermarkets across the state were bombarded with people preparing for a long freeze out this weekend. Lines are winding around gas stations as the storm approaches. A state of emergency was put in to place at noon, so it would be best to stay off the roads unless there is an emergency.

The state was prepared for this since last night. Classes were canceled at high schools across the state, and the University of Rhode Island and other colleges and universities canceled all activities across their campuses. URI postponed a Saturday men's basketball match-up with St. Bonaventure to 7 p.m., which can still hopefully be played (but perhaps in front of a sparse crowd at the Ryan Center). Most of us, however, will most likely be cheering on Rhody from the comfort of our homes.

All RIPTA buses, including the non-medical ride program, were canceled at noon on Friday in anticipation of the coming storm. People who require public transportation can follow them on Facebook and Twitter at @RIPTA_RI to stay up-to-date with when service will be restored. Residents can sign up for news updates, which will update them of service changes.

This being New England, we're not exactly new to this winter-weather thing. There will still be restaurants and bars open Friday night, but the best advice I could give you is that if you have trouble getting out now, it will be even worse when you are trying to get home later tonight. Be prepared and stay safe.
