PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida teen who survived a shooting will be a special guest at the president's State of the Union address in support of his position on gun control.
Ten months after being trapped in the crossfire between gang members, 17-year-old Megan Hobson is going to Washington D.C. with Florida Democrat Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, to attend the State of the Union address and support his drive for tougher gun control. "Gun violence is deep-rooted and it won't be easy to change, but we must try," said Wasserman-Schultz.
Hobson said, "The bullet that hit me entered the bumper, the trunk, the back seat and entered my pelvis. It shattered my small intestine, my bladder, my hip bone and it severed my nerve on my left side."
President Barack Obama is pushing for universal background checks for all gun buyers. "If they are using it for hunting, then make sure that they are using it for hunting," said Hobson. "If they are using it as a sense of protection for their families, make sure there is always a safety on it or whatever the case may be."
"I'm sure that the AK-47 that was used in that shooting that Megan was involved in and was a victim of was not obtained though the use of a background check," said Wasserman-Schultz.
You can watch tonight's State of the Union address live at 9 p.m. on 7News and online at www.wsvn.com.
